80s fans will know his work as creator of STRIKEFORCE: MORITURI, but he had several decades of success at Marvel starting in the late 70s.  I was probably first introduced to his work on the last couple of years of THE NEW DEFENDERS before its cancellation.

Condolences to those who knew him.

One of those many Marvel writers who filled my days with entertainment. I mostly remember New Defenders. I never read Morituri, but I know that's what he was best known for.

Shocked and saddened.

Writer of the single most moving comic of my childhood - What If The Invisible Girl Had Died.  It hit me really hard, even coming back to it years later.  That's saying something.

Very sad news. The New Defenders was underrated imo.
Condolences to his family and those who knew him.

This is a shock.

STRIKEFORCE: MORITURI is a great sci-fi comic, and his work on THE NEW DEFENDERS, like Matt, was where I first encountered him.

Also a good run on Doctor Strange from 1985 - 1989 on DOCTOR STRANGE, STRANGE TALES and DOCTOR STRANGE: SORCERER SUPREME.

I encountered Gillis very early in my comic book reading, guided by crossovers into his final issues of Micronauts and the New Defenders. The hesitation and fear Gillis's characters expressed when facing impending death was very relatable and has stayed with me for decades.

I first encountered him with DEFENDERS/NEW DEFENDERS and then the
new MICRONAUTS series. Always had solid stories and I enjoyed his work.

Loved Strokeforce: Morituri, a truly exciting book when it came out. Also enjoyed much of his other work.
