Took place on June 6th,1944. Over 14,000 Canadians stormed Juno Beach as part of the largest combined sea, air, land military operation in history.
There was a CBC special on earlier this morning.

I was watching a video with the oldest surviving soldiers receiving France's highest civilian honor from the French and American Presidents. I hope the younger and future generations never forget the sacrifice those soldiers made for our freedoms. They literally saved the world.

With the ever growing presence of various Nationalistic movements around the world and actual Nazis here in our own backyard, all generations (older ones too) are forgetting the sacrifices that were made that day. Makes me anxious history will repeat itself.

It blows my mind that in just a handful of years, there will be no more living WW2 vets. My grandfather fought in the pacific, and I have vivid memories of him as a relatively young man in his 50s when I was a child. How time flies.

My grandfather actually fought in Normandy and was captured by the Americans on July 20. As a child, I loved listening to his stories from those days, although he didn't like to talk about the war very often.

Oliver, did he discuss that battle or his capture with you?
I understand it's common that soldiers don't talk about their war experiences with others, except with the others who went through war like them. It's certainly impossible to go through such experiences and not have it affect you.

Yes, he talked about that in detail. But he was not there on June 6. His division was in Brittany at the time and was then deployed to the north near Cherburg after the landings.

It doesn't blow mine at all, simply because of the cold, hard passage of time. In 1984, there were major celebrations to mark the 40th anniversary of D Day. At assembly in school we discussed why they were marking the 40th and not the 50th. Someone ventured that it was because many would not be alive to see the 50th. Our teacher told us this was correct. I don't think they were wrong. We are now double that span of time on.
Which is, of course, not to take anything at all away from what those brave men did that day.
