"...not always easy, as global corporates and supply chains muddy the waters..."

An understatement! I'm going through the same thing currently.

A friend of mine has been arguing that Trump says all these crazy things by design. That is is all part of some elaborate 5D chess game. Hard for me to see that.

Trump isn’t smart enough for 2d chess, much less 5d.

He's not a complete idiot. If he is, we should all be a lot more concerned that he's been able to do everything that he's managed to get away with.

Trump is basically like any well-experienced predator; he knows how to cover his own ass and he knows how to amass resources. Part of his skill set is that he's an innately gifted propagandist and highly charismatic figure, and he definitely knows how to read people immediately and target their weaknesses.
I think Trump's real weakness - and one that we're all reeling from now - is that he thrives in one-to-one conflict but has no idea how to manage multiple conflicts, and he also doesn't know how to approach a problem unless he can reframe it for himself as a conflict. Bear in mind, this is a guy who asked why we couldn't just blow up a nuke to stop a hurricane. This shows his other weaknesses as being ignorant as fuck about anything outside of his immediate predator worldview, and of course immune to learning.

He's not a complete idiot **** Yes, he really is. He’s just managed to get the “right” people around him this time more than the last.

He's not smart. He seems devoid of normal concerns of empathy or fear of screwing things up, and this is combined with an animal instinct for weak spots or loopholes in rules and a knack for simplistic propaganda, which makes him curiously dangerous and effective.

Interesting observations. In my view, Trump is quite smart. He has a canny sense of politics. He knows how to use the media to his benefit. The machinery of the government was thrown against him, yet he came out on top. He's charismatic.

Trump did/is none of those things. His enablers want something (among others to ram their literally pre-medieval beliefs down everyone's throats) and he is just a convenient conveyor of their plague. His appeal, if you can call it that, is that he taps the inner-fear fetish of his followers. If, by the grace of Cthulhu, he gets called home sooner rather than later (not lookin' too healthy!), it's gonna take years to dig the ticks out even after they fall upon each other scrambling for their cut of the wreckage like the Diadochi. Very possible the country balkanizes in the process.

Trump is not smart and it is disingenuous to say that he is. What he is, is rich, powerful, enabled and a bully - a devastating combination. He says very stupid things, that you or I would not dream of saying. And if we did, say about him, he counters by saying we should not say those things. Think about what he says about Canada or Greenland - and think about what he says about how Zelensky speaks about him - which is the actual worse of those things? Yet he attacks Zelensky, and continues to call the leader of Canada a governor - which is the more rude, which is the more insulting?
He envisages horrible things, and manages to get those things through bullying - if someone tries to stop him, he just sues them into the ground, because he has the money, not because he is able to outsmart them. The man has been bankrupt multiple times - and yet he has managed to maintain vast amounts of money.
He’s not smart, he’s a wrecking ball bully, with a bunch of people that enable him. If enough people with money had the guts to say no, he’d be gone in a second, but they won’t because they are making billions. (speaking of money - this man’s policies are so smart, that since he came into office, my pension fund, which was at a 45 degree incline under Biden, is now at a 45 degree negative incline, losing thousands in the last month. That tells me all I need to know about this man’s ability to manage an economy)

Brennan: "...He's charismatic..."
This is pretty much the only thing I agree with, except I will acknowledge Trump has just enough smarts to be a snake oil salesman to an unfortunately large segment of the American population. In that instance, he need only be smarter than the majority of those stupid enough to follow him. He gains those followers through his lying., manipulation, and, yes, charisma. I don't get that charisma, but it's undeniable.
And those followers, Trump's literal cult, are in large enough numbers that it puts fear into those in the normally non-MAGA Republican party members who would normally oppose such a fool. But sadly, they are scared, and power hungry enough to disregard any decency and good conscious, So, those Trump can't actually swindle and con, he intimidates and bullies using the force of his followers to back him.
In a nutshell, it's what James wrote above: "...He’s not smart, he’s a wrecking ball bully, with a bunch of people that enable him."
The man is clearly a moron. Manipulating fools and intimidating weak-willed and spineless cretins does not make him a stable genius, or any other kind of genius.

He is a sociopathic narcissist with ambitions to be an authoritarian dictator.
The psychological diagnosis has been made by hundreds and hundreds of professionals who recognize the behavior and the “charisma”.
He has been mentored by other maniacs- Roy Cohn and Vladimir Putin especially- to employ an effective playbook for fulfilling his appetites through aggressive corruption. It worked for his mentors in the exact same way it’s working for him.
The current “wrinkle” is that Elon Musk’s dreams of realizing “the Network State” is (for the moment) keeping Trump’s administration in an incredibly rapid mode of destruction. It isn't inherently helpful to their goals for any reason anyone has recognized so far, but it's a fact: Musk and Trump are destroying at a gallop.
Trump's smarts/charisma/bullying/instincts are all those developed by narcissists everywhere. The incredible vastness of his appetite is what sets him apart.
