In the spirit of flooding the zone, two ghastly news items; RFK the Lesser saying diet and exercise can prevent serious effects from communicable disease, and the ICE arrest of Mahmoud Khalil, likely pursuing a rapid deportation.
While both are fucked, the latter is somehow more alarming because it strikes at the core of our legal system. I suspect we may be able to swing back to a pro-science view on preventative health in a relatively short time (within a decade); I'm not certain how long it will take to rebuild the infrastructure of American law once it's been thoroughly remade in Trump's image, but I suspect it's going to be a couple of generations, if ever. Once you lose a right, what is the path to get it back?

the ICE arrest of Mahmoud Khalil.......................... Why is this being singled out as such a big deal? Isn't this happening all over the country?

Because he's not here on a visa, he's here on Green Card--permanent resident.
What happened to him is clearly a violation of the First Amendment.

It's because he's been specifically targeted for arrest and detention for political speech, and he has a green card. He faces deportation. It's also going to be used as yet another test case of the expansion of Executive power. All of ICE's shit is worrisome, but if this is allowed to stand the implications are terrifying.

Mahmoud Khalil is a test case. It will be adjudicated tomorrow (Wednesday) and may reach the Supreme Court in a test of First Amendment rights. If this vile administration succeeds, then what’s to stop them from going after literally anyone who isn’t in lock step with their stated goals?
Yes, “just one guy” but an important step any way you look at it.

I was on a Green Card (which is white) for a few years, 1981 to 1988. It was fun to flash my “resident alien” ID at cons, but I elected to become a full fledged American citizen as soon as I was able. Now I’ve been a damn Yankee for longer than I was anything else.

I wonder if Canadian comic book artists would have to pay a tariff to sell their pages to an American publisher.

Tariffs have to be applied specifically, do they not? It’s not a case of “everything Canadian”.

** Seems like “Free speech absolutist” doesn’t mean what it used to.

Once the First Amendment was invoked to protect Rap lyrics endorsing rape, the edges began fraying very quickly.

Interesting. Deporting people for speech seems like the opposite end of the rope from protecting violent speech.
