I just went to a comic shop to buy two issues of CAPTAIN AMERICA I had missed (my subscription ran out) and the 30-page one (the first J. Michael Straczynski #1) was $5.99 and the 22-page one (the "Finale" issue--the unnumbered finish to the last series) was $4.99, and so was #2 (my first subscription issue--which only cost me $2 in my renewed subscription).
At the same time, I see that DC is starting a line of 5.5 X 8.5 "Compact Comics" next year that will cost $9.99--and reprint 12 issues of WATCHMEN, BATMAN: HUSH, ALL-STAR SUPERMAN, and more!
Who's going to pay $5 for a single issue when they can get 12 times as much for double that price?! And the subscriptions are a great deal!
It's almost as if the comics publishers don't want the monthlies to survive. Or the retailers?
