GCD suggests Star Brand #1's published cover may have been pencilled by Bret Blevins and inked by Tom Palmer or Al Williamson (looks more like Palmer to me). Marvel Age #47 featured two unused covers to Star Brand #1, JRJR's one and another one one by Blevins and Williamson, which was later used for Star Brand #10.

Doesn’t look like a Blevins face to me.

Thanks for the thread title fix. There’s so much going on behind the scenes that “rejected” just seemed disrespectful.

Yeah, I was thinking that a proposed cover sketch would surely be submitted for approval rather than bothering going through the trouble of a full rendering only to have it be rejected.

Since we changed the thread title, I can post this one!  I have no idea if it was a commission or what, but I like it!  Gene Colan was the best!

The thread title change should not be seen as opening the door to posting images that are not really unused covers. I’ve done a truckload of commissions representing imaginary covers, and none of them could tuly count as “unused”.

The thread title change was to make it MORE accurate, not LESS.

Unused cover for Avengers 37 by interior artist Don Heck, and the published version by Gil Kane.

I remember reading once where Stan said something to the effect of "Avoid showing the backs of the Heroes on the cover" .  Something about any particular comic may be someone's first and need to catch their eyes.

May have been what happened on the above images.

I went through a ton of covers for a personal project once and I came across one SPIDER-MAN and one HULK (magazine) cover each with the hero's back to the reader--and it did indeed strike me as a little weird!

My first issue of UNCANNY Chris wrote me a splash page where pretty much everyone had their backs to the camera.

Mr. Byrne,

Do you have any behind-the-scenes information on why the beautiful X-Factor #2 cover you created was not used (and why the final version is almost identical to your work)?

Thank you!
