It was 294 that was disappointing! And then 295 was even worse, because that was when it began to sink in that the JB absence was no blip... At the age I discovered them, I found it hard to swallow that JB's run didn't continue -- and I was buying them as back issues!

I made it from FF #232 straight through to #270 (plus Annuals)... and then #286 as I had dropped all the main 'super' titles from everywhere by that point but still wanted to see Jean Grey's comeback. I had been a regular from #213 up to #225 too though. Marvels started looking cheaper in a lot of little ways at some point in the early-mid '80s... the house ads seemed progressively blander and sterile, and the cover coloring flat and garish more often. All those little corner banners for The Beyonder/Secret Wars were as ugly as the massive contest headers, and they seemed to keep using those for years after for other things.
I wonder if they wanted a simple cover that even a small child could 'read' with that #293 replacement cover? I got the feeling they didn't respect their audience (or creators) as much as they had earlier. :^(

I’d been reading the FF since issue 149 (passed on most of the Moench/Seinkiewicz issues) and had loved Mr. Byrne’s run — I was confused by the cover not being from Mr. Byrne and disappointed that this was his final issue.

Did we know it was his final issue when it hit the stands? I didn’t until the
next issue came out.

Yeah, if Marvel thought the face that Steranko drew on the Hulk for Annual #1 was too scary, they certainly weren’t going to use that Tower of Shadows cover!

The extra features in the back of the AMAZING SPIDER-MAN Epic Collection #1 have this unused cover for AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #10. The unused one is by Steve Ditko and the published one looks like the Enforcers were done by Ditko while the Spider-Man figure was penciled and perhaps inked by Jack Kirby.
Boy, the Ditko one looks great and is exciting, while the Kirby replacement is not that thrilling and sort of bare looking.

Not getting why the Ditko cover was passed over for the Kirby one. Ditko's was more exciting and filled the space nicely. Kirby's ... did not. And that's one wonky Kirby Spider-Man.

Spider-Woman #1 unused cover by Infantino and Wiacek. That's how it was labeled anyway.
Sinnott did the Published cover.

Interesting unused cover of Spider-Woman #1, Doug. But I can see why the Sinnott cover was used. Everything about it SCREAMS "1st Issue." The character was literally in the spotlight.
Spider-Woman herself, though, looks very Romita-esque.
