Seems like some of the bright and cheeriness came more from the printers than the colourist.

There was a Golden cover to Avengers Annual #10... it's just that it wasn't used (rejected). I can imagine people buying comics they otherwise didn't want just for his covers same as with Neal Adams and Michael Kaluta. I did buy some I otherwise wouldn't for Perez... and Byrne; a Many Ghosts Of Dr. Graves and a Justice Machine just came to mind, oh and more recently a Popeye! :^D

Michael Golden had submitted three sketches for the cover of Avengers Annual #10, but these were rejected and not fully drawn. He drew a commission circa 2011 based on one of the proposed covers. link link

That’s a lot better than that Milgrom cover.

I hate these stories of rejected covers. The rejected version is almost invariably better than the one that ends up getting used.
Except for the ones Stan Lee rejected. He really had a good eye for what worked and what didn't.

Even tho I do prefer Golden over Milgrom I can see why it wasn’t used. It’s very busy and Ms Marvel obscures almost the whole logo.

Here's one of my all-time favorite covers--and I was surprised to find out years later that it was a Joe Sinnott solo job! (But now I see it--his initials are right there!)
Sinnott did a few other covers I like, but this is iconic!

There was another Spider-Woman #1 cover by Infantino that was rejected, the one they did use is iconic though.
Kirby did a lot of great covers on '70s Marvels, definitely in the would buy it for the cover alone category on some.

Paul Gulacy's covers (and often splash pages) always looked liked movie posters.
