JB, about how old was Luthor* in your handling of the character?

And how do you personally pronounce Luthor? With an “er” or “or” sound
on the end?

As far as the conversation upthread about "rushed" SECRET WARS art, while I understand JB's misgivings about readers trying to discern this, I think it's fair to say that Zeck's work got... simplified(?)through the run of SECRET WARS (and this after two issues of fill-in by Bob Layton, IIRC):

First Venom Splash Page Original Art For Auction

This may not be all Zeck's "fault" - maybe the book wasn't scheduled properly, maybe there was a family emergency taking him away from the drawing table. But in both this series and his PUNISHER mini, the really gorgeous pages found in the first issues are harder to find in later ones.

Just my opinion, of course.

That particular issue of SECRET WARS has three separate inkers credited.

Not to mention the fact that Shooter was notoriously late with his
plots/scripts which pushed everything closer and closer to the deadline. It
was a scheduling nightmare.

Completely unrelated - but why is SECRET WARS #8 considered the first appearance of the black costume, when AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #252  was published seven months prior?

It’s not. Some people on eBay don’t know what they’re talking about/ lie in
the description. The (partial) origin, perhaps, but in no way can it be
considered the first appearance. That’s like saying GSXM 1 is the first
appearance of Wolverine, Banshee and Sunfire.

I did not buy Secret Wars at the time it came out.  After hearing great things about it for 30 years, I saw a used TPB and bought it.  I could not believe that this piece of crap is what Shooter told Marvel staff their books should be like.  I usually love Mike Zeck’s art, but backgrounds were often absent or minimal.

"Rushed".

I remember reading an anecdote a few years back in COMIC
BOOK ARTIST that involved artist Mike Sekowski. I don't
recall if this came from Sekowski himself or was second-
hand. In any case (Going from memory)...

Sekowski had a rep for being fast. He tended to turn in
jobs well before deadline. Apparently, an editor (don't
recall which or even if said editor was named in the
story) said to him upon receiving some pages (PP), "Your
stuff looks a little rushed. Your work would look so much
better if you took a little extra time on it." So
Sekowski, on his next job for that editor, finished his
work in the same amount of time and sat on it until the
day before deadline. Inspecting the new pages the editor
allegedly said "That's so much better. See what you can
do when you take your time?".

Does this story ring any bells with you. Chief? Or do you
have - or know of - any similar tales?

It certainly plays better to 10-12 year olds.
