True enough now Andrew, although Uncle Ben, the Stacys, Captain Marvel and Jean Grey were still dead at the point that Guardian met his maker. I was naive in those days, thinking that superhero deaths might be permanent.
I recall issue 81 of Ghost Rider (a favourite series of mine). In the Hype Box of that month's Marvel books, it was boldly proclaimed that we would never see GR again.

If they would bring back Mr. Terrific I figured even Zippo The Compressed-Air Man in his yellow wheeled garb might show up again someway. Not to make too much fun of this because it could be cool to see The Fin or whatever forgotten character Roy Thomas used to revive.
I think because he had a flag motif the crazy fans here cried "flag desecration" over that issue, but maybe they weren't crazy enough to burn copies... there were some black armbands though. This all before the internet had really gotten going! Someone could do a mini-documentary on Guardian's Guardians (but only after they do one on the artist who announced via all the local news media how he was going to smash 'Sniffy The Rat' onto a canvas in front of all who came to downtown Vancouver to make a work of Art. On the day it was supposed to happen he got chased away by a small crowd and I never heard of the guy again, nor Sniffy. Maybe he was an Andy Kaufman fan).

As an Englishman I've seen Captain Britain die more than once, but this was after realising that nothing is permanent with the big two. I actually wish that Marvel had a policy of death being final for heroes; it would add weight to some great stories.

The glut of main character deaths (and their reversals) in comic books in the past 20- 30 years is...I don't even have a word for it. It's beyond ridiculous.

Wasn’t the latest Ms Marvel comeback announced before her actual death
had been published?
& all so they could make her a mutant to match the Tv show?
Similarly, Moon Knight looks like they are badging the last issue of the
current series as his death, with a new series launching immediately
afterwards.
Tension there is not.

I didn't peak.I didn't know who it was going to be, but as
the story unfolded, signs were pointing towards a certain
character, and that gut-wretching page confirmed it.
As an aside, how impossible is it to avoid spoilers these
days with the advent of social media? I'd be online, and
some bozo would stick a spoiler in the title of his
podcast/video that randomly shows up in my recommended
videos to watch.

Honestly can't remember. I bought it as a back issue anyway, but my staple diet of comics around then was only slowly transitioning from Marvel UK reprints to US imports, and so I was always behind the curve. Guardian would have seemed alive to me when I read it, I'm sure. Really love that issue. I don't like spoilers, but at the same time, when I was 11 or 12 I could have read that issue five times over and still got the impact anew each time I read it.

I remember reading AF 12 in my parents car while they were grocery shopping.I was eagerly awaiting that issue and like Mac, I was blown away. No peeks were sneaked. Likely the most important comic book issue of my life. I have a copy, that's been framed on my wall for the last 20+ years, that JB was kind enough to sign for me.

Although characters often return from the Great Beyond in comics, I'm not sure JB would have brought back Mac. His death seemed pretty definitive and the team without him was heading in a very different, non-traditional direction (even more, maybe, than it had already been charting). Not to say never, but it doesn't seem to me as though a return was in the cards.

That said, it wouldn't *completely* have shocked me if Guardian had returned (for real) during their lowest moment--though with a much better explanation than "yeah, he really was thrown through space to friendly aliens who made him a cyborg."

I've mentioned this before, but Robert Kirkman's ploy of promoting false upcoming issues of THE WALKING DEAD to hide the sudden series finale was a stroke of genius in this modern world.
Back to AF, and I remembered thinking that Mac's 'return' was a real cop-out - until the excellent double-bluff was played...!
