Darren - it was Odyssey 7. I first went to the Manchester shop for a Chris Claremont, Art Adams & John Bolton signing of Classic X-Men 1 Then I went to the Leeds shop.
I can’t remember if I bought the Madcap DD issue or if it was my brother who had started uni there.
The shop in Huddersfield I went to escapes me now. It was a typical newsagents & tobacco shop, but the owner loved comics & I bought loads. We would often talk about them. He even got in things like Camelot 3000, Dark Knight returns etc.

I haven’t read AF 12 yet, but I ordered the Alpha Flight Omnibus that comes out this fall, so please don’t spoil it.

I tend to flip through comics before I read them, so yeah, I peeked. Still surprised, although I can't recall having a particular theory about who was going to go. Northstar, maybe?

James Woodcock - thanks, just wondered. I live in Sheffield (not too far from Hudders) and have shopped at Sheffield Space Centre since 1980 and was curious if you'd made that journey back in the day.Like you I had a particularly place that stocked the new monthly comics, a bookstall in Sheffield Market, but occasionally would have 'skip months' were titles wouldn't show up, which was somewhat annoying as you might imagine.

Skip months were a pain! Usually a double sized anniversary issue (Due to the price difference?) or part 2 of a brilliant story, like Days Of Future Past, grrrrr!

Oh my gosh Bill, they really were, especially if a story started in the regular book then continued into an annual or double sized special (X-Men 137 anyone?)

I mostly remember how right afterward a bunch of weird Canadian comic fans were getting a lot of attention protesting the death of Guardian. They called themselves Guardian's Guardians and they even appeared on some tv news shows. I was approached to sign some petition about making him be returned for the dignity of Canada at some convention... I didn't sign, I may've even said how there are more than enough superheroes around anyway. I remember an elf in Elfquest getting clobbered (One Eye?) and some of those fans were bent out of shape). I only got kind of depressed and gave up DC when Supergirl was erased. Trina Robbins made some kind of joke of how wearing the costume to San Diego would be the ultimate in tackiness.
Anyway, it didn't mean a lot to me as a reader at the time, sorry. Guess I never built up any great feelings for Guardian/Mac. If I peeked or not making no difference to that.

I still remember reading those couple of pages and being in absolute shock at what I was seeing.
PS. I probably bought the issue from Forbidden Planet in London but now I'm a lot closer to Huddersfield as mentioned on earlier in the thread!

If a book or comic was interesting, I had no desire to spoil it by flipping to the end. Much more satisfying to let the story unfold as the author intended!
Which brings back a memory: on occasion (including with some of JB's best work), a story was SO interesting that before turning a page, I'd make myself cover the right side of the next two-page spread with blank paper or cardboard -- to keep my eyes from jumping a page ahead too early!

The owner of the comic shop spoiled it as I walked towards his shot in the Brooklyn Flea Market.
I was upset, but for some reason i didn't call BS on the story. You know when the reader puts his editor hat on and says, "that can't happen.... the creator is wrong."

Did not skip ahead but was not to concerned about who it might be getting killed.
No one really dies permanently in comic books. Right!
Right?
