Going to be a blood bath on the Republican side.
My concern is we will see another 2016, people staying home and not voting, thus ushering in DeSantis or whomever.

I can understand the concern, but my gut/hope tells me that won't be the case. 2020 was a record year in vote count (for both Biden and Trump so yeah that could still go either way) - and now with Roe v Wade overturned, I can't see too many women sitting this out regarless of how they feel about the subject.
I think that the mentality of "why bother voting, they're all the same anyway" really took a hit after 2016.

Yet what I am seeing is echoes of the 2016 mentality. The popular press would not take Trumf seriously. They would not accept that he had any chance of winning. Now, repeatedly I see reports that he is slipping in popularity, that he is losing Republican support. And once again, it’s overlooked that it doesn’t matter how many votes he gets, only where he gets them.

Republicans seem to be making the same mistakes so far. I'm hoping Christie's mission is to take the fight to Trump and DeSantis; he might be able to bring them down a bit, opening the door for a better candidate. Not sure he'll succeed but I hope that's where he's going.

Andrew - Who is the better candidate? I'm not voting Republican, but out of the ones currently running, Christie is the only one I find palatable.

You might consider Joe Biden “feeble”, but the man gets shit done.
I’ll take feeble….effective and compassionate over vigorous fascism, energetic grifting, brazen lying, phenomenal stupidity and outright insanity any day. And all those things are the GOP stock and trade these days.

I think the distinction made above is the non-sexy, unfit for cable news realization that it's administrations that get things done, not just the man.
And regarding the original point of the thread, doesn't credibility count? Christie spent YEARS touting Trump, even leading his coaching team for his debates. Why would anyone back him or Pence as they purport to now claim they have issues with the guy?

I think there are people who run for president knowing they have no chance to win. Some run as spoilers. Some run hoping to bring attention to issues they feel passionate about. And others are hoping to parlay their performances in debates and primaries into a cabinet position in the next administration.
I think Christie is a combination of some of those things. He wants to prevent another Trump presidency and score a position in the next cabinet; maybe even VP. Aside from Trump, the leading Republicans are all southerners, so Christie may bring some value to the eventual ticket as a New Englander.

I think if Trump wins the Republican nomination there will be a huge turnout on the Democratic side, but if Trump loses, another 2016 is possible, because Anti-Trump sentiment is much stronger than enthusiasm for Biden.

Honestly, I don't believe any of those running on the Republican side are significantly better; they're all variations on a theme. Unhappily, the Democratic side doesn't have a deep bench to offer this year. I think Biden is doing his best but he's getting up there and it's showing.
