During one of the multiple times we lived in the Bel Air apartments, and I attended Inglewood Elementary, my shortcut to school was across the open spaces surrounding what looked like an industrial complex, but what was actually a huge (to me) hospital for indigenous peoples. In the middle of this sprawl, poking into one of the buildings, was a kind of large alcove that was a small shop for the patients and staff. And anyone else who wandered by, like me. I’d gather glass pop (soda) bottles and trade them in for various candy, most especially my favorite, black licorice “shoestrings”.
