Those look great... Mister Machine! Want!

I wish I'd bought all the 2001s when they were still cheap! Like JB has said, Kirby was not in fashion for a long time and you could get mint copies of Machine Man, Devil Dinosaur, Eternals etc. at a dollar or less. I did have 2001 #1 once and lots of other Kirby #1s of the '70s, but often didn't pursue them past that, and 2001 is one I failed to collect. I vas an dummkopf. :^(

The Kirby 2001 Treasury Edition from 1976 is one of the prized centerpieces of my collection (and probably the cheapest one, too - maybe about $6.00?).  It's everything you want from a Kirby comic visually - the oversized pages are superb. And he clearly felt no reservation about applying his writing style atop the Kubrick/Clarke story.  It's intense and melodramatic in direct opposition to the cool, cerebral film and novel. The contrasts offer a fascinating window into his mind in a way that much of his own work doesn't quite highlight. When I first found it years ago, I wrote that it had "...artists with very distinctive voices that deal in many of the same themes, but with a wholly opposed set of sensibilities. It's like Stephen King writing an adaptation of Mulholland Drive."

I LOVE the Kirby 2001 / Machine Man stuff. Picked up a bunch in the 90s. Those books are magic.

Mark, that was discussed earlier in this thread.  Sometime circa 1976-77, Roy Thomas offered Kirby the job of co-plotter/artist on Fantastic Four, saying he'd give him top billing and pay him for plotting (two things he did not get in the 60s).  Kirby replied that he was willing to draw the book, but he didn't want to co-plot, and he would only do it if Roy would provide detailed plots that broke the story down panel-by-panel.  Roy didn't want to work that way, so he turned down the deal.  Roy has said Kirby was wary of collaboration on writing because he felt it generally led to him doing too much of the work for too little of the money/credit.
