Wow.
Just awful.
The world is a lesser place now.

Even knowing this was coming doesn't lessen the pain. Though I do feel a sense of peace (or something--hard to explain) knowing his journey is at an end. But his influence on the artists that followed him and the joy he brought to fans will never end.

I was told last night by a mutual friend. Held off any announcement here until it was made public.

*  *  *  *  *  *

When they posted on his Facebook page yesterday that he was home and resting comfortably it seemed to me that news of his passing would be coming fairly soon.

I got to meet George once at a convention here in Phoenix, probably about 20 years ago, and the stories you hear about how nice he was and how much he enjoyed his fans was true.

I enjoyed work from the issue where I was first exposed to it (THE AVENGERS #141), and he refined his style over the years to where he was undeniably one of the best and most popular artists working.

He leaves behind an incredible body of work over his nearly 50 years of drawing, but two stand out for me - CRISIS ON INFINITE EARTHS my have had its problems, but the art certainly isn't one of them, and JLA/AVENGERS, which was Perez's dream job, even if it took 20 years longer than expected to see print.

We all hope to leave a mark behind when we pass, and sometimes we're lucky enough to make a small contribution that will outlast us, but George leaves an enormous one - both as an artist and from all accounts, as a human being.

Oh, this hurts terribly.

George is gone.
Neal is gone.

Mr. Byrne, PLEASE don't walk under any ladders! The small collection of geniuses in comics keeps getting smaller, and we just can't take losing you too. It is inevitable, but let it be FAR in the future!

Very hard for me to find the words to adequately honor George Pérez... he had such an impact on me while I was growing up wanting to be an artist...  my condolences to his family, friends & fans.

-C!

Trying to focus on the joy these giants we recently lost have left behind in their excellent body of work and their otherwise unquantifiable contributions to the medium and to the community.   < id="protanopia"> < id="deuteranopia"> < id="tritanopia">

Sad news.

And yet another who gave me joy in my youth is no longer on this planet.
