During my own personal “second era” of buying comics, JB and George
were my two absolute favourite artists. Looking at these last few posted
images reminds me that they both had/have the mutant ability of
making every single character look “right”.

I am just amazed at how much George's work evolved over the years.

He was already a favorite when I first noticed his work in the mid-70s, but he continually refined his style over the year,

He started out with a style that had a lot of Kirby to it.  As his art matured he improved his mastery of the human anatomy, and slavishly worked to give each character a unique face.

Team books or books that had hundreds of characters were truly where I saw George's greatest strengthens and storytelling abilities.

The Avengers (70s and 90s stints), Justice League of America, The New Teen Titans and Crisis On Infinite Earths were masterpieces in how to draw, interpret and juggle multiple characters.

Three months. Somehow it seems more.

Some years ago, on our way out of a convention--the third day and we were exhausted--my very young daughter and I saw a fellow at a table apart from the artist alley... with a long line of people waiting.
I asked her, "Would you like to meet the artist who created Raven?" (Raven was then her favorite character in the world.) And she smiled wide and said, "Yes!!"
So we walked over and I said, "Mr. Perez, my daughter would just like to say something, if she could."
"I like Raven!!"
He beamed (as only he could) and said, "I like Raven too!"
"That's all we meant to say..."
"No, wait."
He got out a sketch pad and, while chatting with my daughter about how she had 'met' Raven, sketched her both the Teen Titans version and a silhouette of his original.
He handed it to her and I said, "Um, how much...?
"It's on me." He nodded to his assistant to confirm and the assistant smiled back with a nod.
We thanked him profusely and my daughter now has that sketch on her bedroom wall. It kind of broke her heart to hear he'd passed away.
But it's one of my favorite convention stories, because it's about one of the nicest guys in the business and how kind he was to my daughter.

That's a beautiful anecdote, Andrew.

And I like Raven too.

Thanks, all!
She got to meet Tara Strong as well (the voice of Raven on TEEN TITANS) and they hit it off. Might have helped that my girl had purple hair at the time...
But meeting Mr. Perez was really her first time saying hello and thanking someone who'd created one of her favorite characters.

I never really hunted down Perez's comics like I do JB or Romita JR. But when I picked up something with his art, I enjoyed it. I'm most familiar with his New Teen Titans and Crisis work, but I always found those pages quite overwhelming in terms of the amount of information in the renderings. Re-reading Crisis on the Kindle App gives me the panel by panel view that I can zoom in on. It's a whole different experience and gives me a much better appreciation of his artwork.
If you haven't done this before, I highly recommend giving it a shot. I will try this next on Perez's Wonder Woman run, as I've only read an issue or two.
