I missed your THIRD? What is it called? When was it published?••• I wrote a Wonder Woman novel, GODS AND GODDESSES, during my time on that title. It was supposed to come out with the novelizations of THE DEATH OF SUPERMAN and KNIGHTFALL, but editorial incompetence delayed it a year.

My copy is sitting on a shelf in a nearby room. It might be time for a reread.

A "fan" letter from 1982 just burst out of me. Kindly disregard:
Dear Editors If you creeps have really killed off Cyclops (the BEST character in the X-Men) then I don't know what to say. You seem to let this new guy, BYRNE (as he calls himself) do whatever the heck he wants. And he seems to HATE the X-Men! First you let him turn Phoenix into a little kid and have her sacrifice herself which was just emotionally draining-- and unnecessary since he brought Jean back anyway! And now Phoenix is back too, but she (or should I say BYRNE) has killed Cyclops!? Is there no character he won't torture?!
I've been a reader since day one and if you don't care about subscriptions or your fans, then I don't know what to say. Stan and Jack would never kill Cyclops, so why do you let Byrne do it? Bring back Roy Thomas or Neal Adams or Warner Roth if you have to, but someone needs to fix this or I will not renew my subscription. I will stand at my local drug store and protest every customer I see who picks up one of your magazines until all your sales stop and you make things right.
Yrs. sincerely, Angry Anonymous Fan

From a historical perspective, a letter taking that tone would have been more likely in 1977 than ‘82. At the beginning of my tenure on UNCANNY I was greeted with a veritable deluge of “bring back Cockrum” mail from outraged fans who, of course, had no idea what was going on behind the scenes. (Sadly, for Dave, his return a few years later was met with an even larger demand to “bring back Byrne!”)

Do you really think Byrne would kill Cyclops after trying to rehabilitate the character?Cyclops' death reminded me of his "death" in UXM #133!

**
I loved Dave's art on his return to the X-Men, but looking back now, I don't like the stories as much as I wish I did.
It is amazing to be "redoing" that era with Elsewhen. It only occurs to me just this minute that another alternate universe I'd like to visit is one where these stories were drawn by Dave and written by JB.
And, as my mind wanders down that road, I'm imagining a Dave-written version of Elsewhen which picks up at the second half of the first Shi'ar battle.
What a different book that would be! Swashbuckling space adventures with Nightcrawler and Phoenix possibly holding down the core of the book? Sweet fantasy.
I think Elsewhen is a powerful moment in comic book history. I predict people will be unpacking levels of interest and meaning from this series for years to come.
