With young Jean pulling the strings, this reminds me of a particularly horrific Twilight Zone episode.

There are bits and pieces from a lot of stories coming together here. Hopefully in a way that will be new enough to seem somewhat original!

I was reminded of the episode where everyone in the town was afraid of a boy with frightening, reality-altering powers.

Does Cyclops see individual colors or is everything he views (with or without his visor) a shade of red?

Yep.  I've already mentioned that the X-Men should careful or they'll be banished to a cornfield.

Yeah, way too soon for trouble to come knocking. =)

I like the idea that Xavier has an admirer. Is he the type of person that would "accidentally" learn someone's feelings for him or does he prevent himself from knowing certain aspects of a person's mind?

As for Xavier, I'd bet he's disciplined enough not to pry into people's thoughts and feelings, though if someone is "shouting" mentally he'd likely hear what they're thinking unintentionally. Probably depends on the intensity of the thought/feeling.

It's been noted before, and by plenty of people other than me, that telepathy might be a lot like hearing, in the sense that it is always ON.

As we go thru life we learn to filter that we hear, so that we are not constantly overwhelmed by noise, but we can still find chatter annoying when we're trying to concentrate on something else. Telepathy would be a lot like that, I expect, only across a wider spectrum.

Not quite the same thing, but keep in mind that this issue ends on the 28th of January, and the next "first Monday" isn't until February 7th.
