…it would be funny if JB wrote Wolverine out of the book now. •• No more consideration of that now than in the Seventies.

As always I find myself almost as intrigued by the backgrounds as the subject matter. Plugs in outlets, Unicorns and Bears in a girls room, including the outside brick behind a character as they open the door. So rich in detail! Love it.

It took a while to train myself to draw proper backgrounds. In my early days, I took a very simplistic approach, little more than darkening parts of the perspective grid. As time went by, tho, I became more and more comfortable with the finer details--the argle-bargle-- that add an unconscious level of reality.

What a page !!! I agree for the incredible interiors details. Pure madness in last panel's Jean's eyes.

How do you decide how much detail to add to a given panel, especially after you've done an establishing shot?

As I mentioned upthread, it mostly comes down to how much space there is around the central figure(s). How far back the “camera” is. There’s also an element of emphasis. Sometimes background detail can distract from the important elements in front.

JB, back in the early days, were there any characters you would have wanted as part of the main X-Men cast that weren't included? I think you've mentioned in the past how much you liked the originals-- would you have wanted them there as ongoing cast or were there plenty of X-Men already?

This comes down to one of my “yes” answers. All your points have figured in my thinking at one time or another.

I'll add my admiration for the background on this page. Great figure work, too--Phoenix's boldness and excitement really come across.
