That last Xavier panel has a hint of Kirby in it.

As to the effectiveness of the X-Men in contrast to the FF or Avengers, each team has their particular ace in the hole, correct?  The FF has Reed Richards' sheer brainpower, the Avengers have their selection of raw, next-level powerhouses like Thor and Wonder Man, and the X-Men have their telepaths.

The scale-tippers for each group seem to be the women.
Maxed out, Sue, Wanda, and Jean are the ones who bear the most watching, no pun intended in the case of Mrs. Richards.

I wonder which writer/artist it was who elevated each of those ladies to the head of the class in terms of their respective power levels.

Huh.  It's a mystery.

In relation to Mastermind's tactical usefulness, the M-Men would've perhaps enjoyed less success against the X-Men as they did against the other super-teams, because it's been long  established that illusions aren't particularly effective against telepaths.

Mindtap mechanisms notwithstanding.

JB: One of the fun things about this project, for me, is that I am not restrained by arbitrary rules. The bad guys don’t have to lose because they’re bad. I like the challenge, coming up with legitimate ways for the heroes to win.

***

I like that so much. If the heroes don't have to work as hard as they can to win--and have that outcome feel as though it's in doubt the whole time--then as a reader, I feel let down. This is what's missing from today's comics. Not the scale of the threat but how hard (and smart) the heroes have to work to defeat them.

Wednesday - and we STILL don't know Kitty's fate! :-(

Nails well and truly gnawed to the bone...

Wolverine's boneless, floppy flesh on the floor is reminding me of the visual I had in my head of "Wolverine lying in a hospital bed, bones pulverized, unable to heal".

Obviously Kitty's story will be another issue.  One page to go, but no speculation (argh...must resist).  Just loving this storyline.  A What If mixed within another What If basically (essentially What If the original ending of #137 happened mixed with What If Xavier died and Magneto formed the X-Men).  Looking forward to tomorrow to see if any of my personal guesses are right but my top guess can't happen in one page, and some alternative guesses wouldn't work with the way JB has been writing.  I love it when my guesses are toast as we approach the final page of a story.

Any hints on the next issue (I expect none, but have to ask - hopefully not 20 pages of Wolverine's floppy arms - ugh, had an image of them permanently healing like that...brrrr)?  Do we get page 1 of it on Monday?

If the last page is a "Meanwhile" I think the rest of my hair will fall out.

I just wanted to mention again how striking the silhouettes are in the page from April 23rd. I love how the pencil's shading adds wonderful texture to them. All the elements of that top panel work so well together. It almost radiates an unearthly low-light glow of the liquid chamber. So cinematic! Absolutely brilliant art.

Lastly, I was watching the old film "His Girl Friday" with Cary Grant. Rosalind Russell plays a reporter that is almost the iconic Lois Lane. I wondered if Mr. Byrne had used her as his mental model.

Not fully, but there was an influence.
