@Joe Parker.
If I am honest with you, I -tend- to separate the art from the artist. So I try not to assimilate to many candid thoughts from people who inspire me*.
It is lovely to see the passion Alex had for the medium but saddening to think he was unable to see a path back to that joy for the medium.
I do feel that it isn't the sole responsibility of the Artist to carry the whole weight of childhood fantasy/magical-wonder on their shoulder. We should each carry our own portion of that. A little wonder in each of us, you might hope, should allow the magic to carry on.
John saw to that here, by scratching this itch and allowing us to come along for the ride. Certainly that action reminded me of the wonder I felt as a child and others here have commented similarly.
[In respect of the drawing of Jean in the first panel, I really like how the angle of the head is handled so convincingly. The orbit around her cam-left eye is awesome.]
* Obvious exclusion being a member of the JBF.
