ART NOTE: Oddly enough, I think that first shot of Jean on today's page is one of the best female faces I've ever drawn.

Maybe the muses are telling me I should beat up my ladies more often!

You are not wrong. The illusion of volume/depth/structure is complete. And even getting clocked on the jaw, you get the sense of Jean's well-formed petite features.

Nicely done.

Story wise, I am sadden that the Cyclops/Marvel Girl led insurrection has met with such a quick end. They make a great duo---it's fun cheering them on.

JB, when you were working on the X-MEN four decades[!] ago, how much did you then perceive that you had a fairly good feel for the characters, both in terms of writing and drawing? I'm not asking for a retrospective critique of your younger work compared to now or even a sincere statement that it was the best you could do at the time, which I certainly believe. Accepting that you knew back then you were doing your best work possible, did you also think, not in any egotistic way... "this is some fairly good X-Men stuff I'm putting out"?

(I ask because in my opinion your feel for the characters today is undoubtedly on the mark, especially if we think of Lee-Kirby and Thomas-Adams as the peaks of the comicbook, but also I didn't think much differently back in, oh, 1979-80. As I much later learned what came from you as opposed to Mr. Claremont, my early impressions have only been more verified.)

Since my disagreements with Chris over his handling of the characters eventually led to my leaving the book, I think it's safe to assume I thought I had a pretty good handle on who they all were!!

That Quicksilver is rather bloodthirsty, isn't he?

@Joe Parker.

If I am honest with you, I -tend- to separate the art from the artist. So I try not to assimilate to many candid thoughts from people who inspire me*.

It is lovely to see the passion Alex had for the medium but saddening to think he was unable to see a path back to that joy for the medium.

I do feel that it isn't the sole responsibility of the Artist to carry the whole weight of childhood fantasy/magical-wonder on their shoulder. We should each carry our own portion of that. A little wonder in each of us, you might hope, should allow the magic to carry on.

John saw to that here, by scratching this itch and allowing us to come along for the ride. Certainly that action reminded me of the wonder I felt as a child and others here have commented similarly.

[In respect of the drawing of Jean in the first panel, I really like how the angle of the head is handled so convincingly. The orbit around her cam-left eye is awesome.]

Don't count them out so fast, Steven! They were knocked down twice and got right back up. Plus, bloodthirsty as alt-Quicksilver may be, alt-Magneto wants them alive... which gives them a slim chance to recover.

And I'll add to the consensus here that that's one damn fine Jean Grey you've drawn, JB!

Wonderful page today.

I was wondering when the alt-Twins were going to make an appearance.

Quicksilver...bragging to Scott about getting it on with ‘Jean’!?

Thats a nasty, gut level taunt right there.  Especially since Quicksilver can...well...y’know....

ZOOM!

Yeah, David. Jean may not even be aware that anything happened. :)
