There is no way this panel is better served by a background.

Backgrounds are an artistic tool, used to enhance or distract as the need may be. At least imo. I LOVE Perez backgrounds that are so detailed it can blow you away, how the heck did he do multiple titles at once early in his career - the poor inkers. Likewise JB did some amazing ones (Savage Land 2 pager immediately comes to mind) and still does. It is all in what is required for the story and should always be in service of it. Not just because you want it to be a photo. Movies are different as often you have real people thus a background is pretty much required but sometimes it is cleared out (mostly by a sky background) for effect.
In the end what I want is to see the story told, if I want beautiful landscape art or cityscapes I know where to go see them. In a comic book I enjoy them when appropriate but also appreciate stuff like the panel presented by Mark McKay above where a background (or even the details on the kid) are irrelevant and would just distract from the story goal.

Sometimes, I feel there are some fans who weigh their comics, and feel they have been shorted if there's not "enough" ink on the pages.

One of my favorite JB panels. Everything you need is just...right there. AND you get the whole artistic motif of "holy fuck, Galactus is darker than Darkseid!"

I’ll admit, until I scrolled down to Darkseid, I was trying to remember when I’d done that drawing of Batman!

I mean, you're free of all editorial constraint, and Darkseid DOES have a previous history with the X-Men....

TANGENT: I wonder how Darkseid sees Galactus. We know big G appears different to different races and beings. What does Darkseid see?

He sees him with bare legs and arms - just like Darkseid!

People who cry 'foul' at the exclusion of an element (backgrounds) need to remind themselves that this is a graphic medium*. There is no small measure of artistic consideration that accompanies the story.
Using this logical fallacy---less background equals less real, someone will have to live in a world where "Oh, the rubble from that building seems to have naturally fallen and formed to title of the story on the splash page!" Or can we agree that artistic expression is a natural tool commonly used in comics.
If the argument is more lines equals better comics, someone is going to have to explain Alex Toth to me.
* Do I believe they have lost sight, "No." they are just looking to recite a fanboy mantra.

There is an element of the kind of fan who grouses that a 4”x4” panel doesn’t have the same level of detail as a 20”x30” commission piece.

Nice page! Love the shadow on Prof. X.
Sorry for being dense, but how is he able to immobilize Colossus if Magneto is controlling his body?

Mr. Byrne - fascinating that Darkseid sees Galactus much as humans do.
As to today's panel - "...but maybe not as smart as ours". That may define how the X-Men win over their counterparts. It holds me fascinated!
