I know that there are threads that have tried to cover this topic... but the question of what a mutant is - *is* - is still a little ambiguous around the edges, depending on who is writing the character.
Franklin Richards. Mutant. Clear cut. Obvious.
Jean Grey. Mutant. ...but her initial mutation was telepathy, correct? (referring to when she was a child & had that bonding experience with her friend who was struck by a car.) But was that a retcon?
We all knew Marvel Girl's mutation to be focused around her telekinesis, until the Professor gave her that telepathic 'boost'... so which one is her original gift? Does having two different power sets make her an anomaly?
We're not even gonna touch this "secondary mutation" stuff that they've done with characters like Sunspot or Emma Frost...
But Nightcrawler.
.teleports .walks on walls .prehensile tail/ curious fingers-toes .glowing yellow eyes .superhuman agility .fangs/pointed ears .indigo/furry skin ."invisible in shadow" (at least Alan Davis tried to make that make sense)
Grab bag indeed!
But to point to Reed and Sue Richards... two humans having an empowered child = mutant offspring.
If two super powered mutants have a child with one of the parent's powers... that kid is NOT a mutant, correct? They just spun out a new species, true unto itself. (thinking in terms of Cable, Rachel Summers, or Daken.)
So where would that leave Nightcrawler? Aren't mutants supposed to be born looking more-or-less "normal" until puberty sets in? Wasn't baby Kurt teleporting pretty much since birth when Mystique dropped him over that waterfall? He was born with her blue skin... and his father's demonic appearance, ssoooo...
Is Nightcrawler, in fact, NOT a mutant after all?
