If the Imperial Guard face the X-Men at full strength - and we ignore that thing about the good guys usually winning - our heroes' chances wouldn't be good.

Boo! Gladiator is evil! And prejudiced! Whose planet was Astra on Mr. judge-and-executioner? Bad man! >:^(

I only found out about ELSEWHEN a few days ago and I'm all caught up now.

Mr. Byrne: this is glorious!  Thank you!

Funny thing... when I was a kid I loved the X-Men.  Back when I was reading the Dark Phoenix storyline I was about 9 years old or so.  My parents were going through a divorce and the violent "breakup" of Scott and Jean with her death in #137 really hit hard.

I used to daydream myself to sleep imagining how I could prevent Jean's death by inserting myself (with super powers naturally) into the story.  (The fun part was trying to figure out the most limited power set and still make it work somehow.)

Anyway, for a while there I would quite literally dream in John Byrne & Terry Austin artwork.

And now, for the first time in about 40 years, I am doing it again!  I've caught myself several times over the last few days waking up to a John Byrne illustrated dream.

Mr. Byrne, if you are reading this, I just wanted to let you know how wonderful I think your artwork is.  It has certainly brought me a lot of joy over the years.  Thank you again!

The X-Men have one ace up their sleeve that the Imperial Guard doesn't have: Cyclops.

Again referring back to the Antarctica fight   ---   having a telepathic link with his team, even money says that Cyclops could out-tactic the Guard.   I don't know how powerful Oracle is in comparison to Professor X, but either he or (Marvel Girl?) should be able to keep her busy while the other telepath links Cyke with the team.  Be it convincing an army of Sentinels to fly into the sun, or ricochet-zapping an entire squad of buzz-saw murder cars with a single shot  ---  Cyclops knows how to out-think the long odds & come up with a win.

I like the way the eyes tell the story in that first panel. Astra's rage and Kitty's fear are quite evident.

I feel the X-Men vs the Imperial Guard comes down to one factor - Gladiator. I think it's a fair fight, or even tipped the X-Men's way if he's taken out of the picture.

The most powerful X-Man could probably take Gladiator in straight sets. That, of course, is Professor Charles Xavier. He stops Gladiator cold, and might even be able to turn him against the I.G.

So... in the X-Men vs a Gladiator-less I.G., what is the result? Without Astra too? It might be closer than a lot would think.

Oh, and hi Joe! Welcome to the board! Thursday is your day to monitor the Neutral Zone portal. Look out for Annihilus... he's tricky. ;)

No doubt Gladiator is the IG's "big gun," but I also think Professor X could take him out of play. It might require all of Charles' attention to keep Kalark under control, but that alone might allow the X-Men the upper hand in a fight.

Didn't we just see Professor X humbled by the lash of Hussar a couple of issues ago? I'm glad Jahf was there to intervene...

With the I.G. membership now reduced thanks to Dark Phoenix/Lilandra, the X-Men might stand a chance.

But Gladiator (and possibly Jahf) are big guns and that's a tall order.

Kurt may have been getting a bit cold in those boxers through his confused travels.
