I find myself wondering how Chris might have scripted it, to undo that effect.

X-Men must LOSE, after all!!

It's all too easy to imagine "Chris Claremont style" anxieties, doubts and
interpersonal preoccupations peppered throughout.

Elsewhere is a little like revisiting a favorite old radio-show only to discover
that some of what you thought was original sound-design was actually just
static. It helped create a certain mood, but it wasn't all necessarily supposed
to be there.

Good analogy.

Over the years I have told people to look at the issues I did with Chris and take in JUST THE ART before reading the copy. When doing the latter, notice how often it actually has little or nothing to do with what's in the pictures. This ranges from enormous speech balloons coming in from off panel, to "impulsive" kisses and resistant tree stumps. And so much more.

Happy go lucky Bobby is the right version imo.  He is Iceman and loves it.  Storm has no modesty issues, nor has she ever.  I honestly couldn't recall her ever changing her uniform - I'll take everyone's word that she has done it many times in the past.  This is the most X-Men I've read in decades so details do escape me. It is funny what details stick in the mind though - like Storms' head piece having lock picks in it (thus why I'm glad it stays).

I need to go back and look at some older issues - such as the tree stump issue - and try to ignore the words (hard for me to do - I read so automatically) and see how it flows.  Hmm... there would be a fun project for someone - remove all words from old X-Men issues and see how they flow.  20-30 years ago I'd have done it but not now.

I've had a soft spot for Iceman that goes all the way back to Spider-Man and his Amazing Friends. Fun to have him back in the action. One of the blights on the comic reading of my youth was what they did to Angel in turning him into Archangel. One of the strongest things about Angel is how magnificent he looks. Feathery wings, blonde hair, iconic costume. So when they changed literally all of that in the late 80s, it was a big mistake. Great to have the real deal here.

That last panel reminded me of Spider-Man and His Amazing Friends.

Agreed with everyone; that last panel is a bugle blast to me. Things are about to get real!

Vinny V. - did you just invoke Amazon? I would so love to see that character again! Not a fiddle around, not "Wonder Woman" - AMAZON. That book was a pure thing of beauty, and just as specified - like an issue starting off a long run of new comic titles.

Wilson M. - Because Warren, like Hank and Scott, is a true gentleman. I guess Charles and Bobby are too... it IS a live-away school...

Steve G. = John Byrne - making COMICS great again, no matter the audience!

Mr. Byrne - I have long felt that Bobby "rides" his ice, a la Silver Surfer, and skates it to get where he's going that much faster.

Scott W. - You're right about the nicks and scrapes. I wonder if unstable molecules can form bandage like creations as well as clothing.

Ms. Jansen - "Noises Off" is a show that SHOULD be running at all times. It's a scene from a British drawing room mystery, done thrice in three scenes... and it's quite "The Show Goes Wrong" before TSGW was released. When done right, it's a side splitter. Even the intermissions should be fun.

Mark H. - I would laugh my ass off to try to  put Claremont type dialogue and seventy-four thought balloons on that page... but I think I would be shot out of a cannon. One of DOOM's cannon!

Wilson M, take 2 - Thanks for all  the iced tea I sprayed all over my monitor, buddy! LOL!!!

I wouldn't want to see just anybody do it, but would happily pay for a "John Byrne cut" of those issues re-scripted by our host.

I love the cockiness of Iceman in that final panel.  It must be a joy for JB to be able mix and match the old and new X-Men.  In many ways I prefer what we're getting here to what was actually published post-JB.

JB, I absolutely forbid you to start Monday with anything like "Meanwhile, 15 hundred miles above the fray..."

I think you’ll probably forgive me.
