So true! I’ve always enjoyed how JB seems to makes the powers
themselves a focus of the story or a scene. What it would mean if those
powers existed or how they might be experimented with. Also -
limitations! As opposed to characters just casually shooting beams of
whatever here and there.

JB, have you considered going back and doing covers for any of these? That could be another great way of introducing the Angel: Blood & Trenches style to these stories.

Covers have always left me with a bin-there-dun-that feeling.

That makes sense, I can definitely appreciate that!

Nightcrawler evading Angel is the comic book moment I didn't know I needed
in my life.

This whole series has been such a trip - I can hardly believe it's 400 pages.
Epic!

The difference between New Magneto and Magneto-Classic has had me going back to look at the minor variations in Magneto's costume over the years -- I'm particularly interested in how the torso of his costume is sometimes completely plain and sometimes it has angled lines (almost as if that square thing below his gorget was meant to form an M). Jack Kirby drew him slightly differently panel to panel in his first appearance.

This is how I first encountered Magneto (by Zeck, plain torso):

Which is similar to how Cockrum drew him (although he draws that loop below the gorget much longer):

Here are some of the ways Kirby drew him:

The first Kirby image is from X-Men #1. That matches JB's version:

Before the What If Magneto made me look more closely at the costume, I had never noticed those diagonal lines before.

One of these things is not like the others...

JB's raw talent almost slaps you in the face.

Nightcrawler may indeed be weakened, both from his many dozens of jumps from New York and from falling victim to Angel's neuro-sword, but let's not count him out just yet.  Mr. Byrne has proven himself time and again to bring out more subtlety and skill from our heroes than Professor Xavier ever has.

Speaking of Charles Xavier...  for someone who trains mutants in a specialized-combat gymnasium, he hasn't quite been able to pull his weight during these recent skirmishes.  Granted, Gladiator having mentioned that he has telepathic shielding may suggest that all of the  Guardsmen are similarly protected (thereby neutralizing the Professor), and alt-Beast may have been provided with some form of shielding as well, seeing as how he and the Professor were face-to-face, well within Xavier's strike zone, yet *seemingly* having suffered no form of counter attack.  Emphasis on the seemingly.

But that is always the trick with Professor X, isn't it.  It's the "Vanisher Connundrum".  You can't have someone with the most powerful mutant brain on earth just roll in and solve the whole thing with a couple of mind blasts and mind wipes, so he has to be checked pretty quickly in order for the story to progress.

This series is the gift that keeps on giving.  But then, what else would we expect from the guy who created Sathanas, the Conclave, and Golgotha.   I'm just hoping that Mr. Byrne could maybe-perhaps work his magic and somehow resurrect Proteus for these pages.

To me, there are two quintessential images of Magneto, one from X-Men #104 by Dave Cockrum and one from X-Men #111 by our host. I judge all others by them.

Just noticing how cool those lines on the back of the hands of the gloves are in the JB image on the right.

I've always LOVED that JB Magneto---but I has to be said, our host has gotten much, much better over the years.

ELSEWHEN is the best X-men I've ever seen, hands down. There's a subtle realism that continues to creep into an artist's repertoire has he hones his craft. Today's Magneto is not the body-builder of that picture---as it should be. ELSEWHEN is so right in every level.

When that piece in the middle of Magneto's chest is drawn more like a "U" shape, it reminds me of a magnet.

BTW, just an observation, in the above Cockrum image we see between Magneto's legs a "go to" piece of tech Dave used often.
