This issue is amazing. I went back to read it again and was amazed at how much had been fit into it...•• One of my grumbles in my early days at Marvel was that everybody seemed to have lost the ability to "pack" issues/stories the way Stan, Jack, Steve and the others had. This was especially true working with Chris, who had a fondness for three part stories--or, more correctly, two part stories with an issue of padding between them.* An early form of "decompression", perhaps? _____________________ * An especially frustrating moment came when Chris and I were forced to "introduce" Disco Dazzler in X-MEN, thus turning a two part origin for Kitty into a three part (padded middle) Kitty/Dazzler intro.

[edited to clarify that here I am referencing my fraternity's chant, not that abomination of a song Van Winkle included it in back in 1990.]

I always loved that ad. ---- The one that used Dave's art to announce my arrival on the book?
A constant source of frustration for Roger Stern, during his first months as editor. Every time an X-Men ad or reference turned up, it was Dave's clip art that was used. Finally Rog went "down the hall" and cleared out the files, replacing the Cockrum art with Byrne art!

I was ignorant of the timing and mis-usage --- but it was just the simple pleasure of seeing the old team in its earliest incarnation.
I'm a sentimental fool.
(Thought Dave did a good job with it, too.)

He did indeed. Quality was not the issue. Rog simply felt the current team should feature the art of the current artist. As he put it, Ford doesn’t advertise this year’s models with pictures of last year’s cars, no matter how terrific those cars might be.

About that ad... this marks me as an old-timer, and probably a bit of a pill too, but seeing it even back then made me long for the original team rather than get hyped about the new. Also, by the time JB and Terry Austin were on the comicbook, how pointless to reference an RIP for Thunderbird...?!

Dave did that drawing around the same time the ANAD X-Men were launching, as I recall. So Thunderbird’s death was still “fresh”.

YAAAY!!!
How GREAT to see Bobby show up! I do not recall if Elsewhen is taking place during the Champions or the "new" Defenders, but it seems so magical that the timing in either case will allow for Angel to appear too!
And then... Hercules? Ghost Rider? Gargoyle? Moondragon? HELL NO. This is ELSEWHEN. If someone wants to do ElseChamps or Elsefenders, let 'em.
I'm getting all primed up for Mr. Byrne's first time showing the original X-Men in action! (I think, except for a flashback panel here and there, that Mr. Byrne has never drawn the original team together and in a fight.) This is SO choice! Here's MY cliffhanger until Monday!
Mr. Byrne, you're a tease and a taunt. Why do you keep dragging me back in? (Not that I'm trying to get out...) BRAVO!
