Apologies as no offense was meant Wallace. Perhaps I misunderstood your post. By murky I meant that it seems like it should be simply known to readers. That you shouldn’t have to ask those questions. How it was first presented is the way it is. Writers retconning things tends to cause confusion and I thought that’s what you were getting at.

If their son had the same telekinetic and telepathic abilities as his mother, he would not be a mutant.
************** What if the son were only a telepath with no telekinetic power? Does that make a difference?

I think point 4 is up for debate, Wallace. The child is displaying powers that are not identical to either mother or father. If the son then goes on to have normal children himself, this would render his power set as unique. I'd say that's a mutant.

Just go back to what Stan said. A mutant is someone born with that “x-
something-or-other” that set them apart from normal humanity. By that
definition, all cases in your example would be mutants because they
would all have that “X” that normal humanity does not possess.

No, Peter. The son would not be a mutant if he displayed the powers possessed by his parents, but no additional special abilities.

Wallace, you seemed to couch your language originally in terms of not being entirely sure, but then repudiate any debate as if you are very sure without any discussion of why. Just 'no' and then a restating of your conclusion. I would be interested to hear your line of reasoning.
Presumably you are contending the son in this case would be a new species or a hybrid rather than a mutant. But a species of one? In the specific case I gave, the son breeds to produce normal offspring. This rules out Scott & Jean's son as a hybrid, which would be sterile (or highly predisposed to sterility), and is not suggestive of a new species as they are not breeding more like themselves.
Separately, I'd also be interested on your view of whether Siryn is a mutant.
