I never have understood the "no backgrounds" criticism. Most comic artists don't draw backgrounds into every single panel. Decorative linework and noodling, and the sort, is NOT background in the strictest sense, but filler or effect. And why do so many modern artists escape such criticism when, to me, it appears the colorist is actually adding most of the "background" in comics these days?
I have seen JB's backgrounds, and they are SPECTACULAR!
Seriously, not only is the criticism grossly unfair, but JB does some of the very best backgrounds on top of it!

I never have understood the "no backgrounds" criticism------------------- I thought this stemmed from a very specific time (long since gone). Around Alpha Flight #8-ish. Stupid that such a temporary thing has resulted in an enduring and false criticism, since complete and detailed backgrounds are present and correct in JB's art for not just years and years but decade after decade.

"It was in FF 358, during the Tom DeFalco and Paul Ryan run. There were 2 JB pin ups, the other was the FF with Silver Surfer and Galactus."

Don't have too much to say about today's page apart from that the reading enjoyment continues. This stealthy, more subtle version of Magneto (so far!) is fun to follow.

I have really enjoyed this series and the art always makes me smile.But this issue 18 has me REALLY excited as I have NO idea what is going to happen. I love it starting off with Uatu and the "What If?" covers. Just marvelous. Like Marvel used to be. Thank you!

I read the JB linked article by Steve Sellers. Despite the unsupported "continuity snarls" I don't find his observations to be too far off from mine---with one big exception.
With what we are seeing here in ELSEWHEN, versus what we saw in the post-JB X-men I think it is abundantly clear that Sellers is giving Claremonet far too much credit for the warmth and vibrancy of that early Byrne-Claremont run.
Claremont was full of hubris---seemingly in love with his own ability to spin a yarn. Unrestrained, the X-men (characters) became victims of his callous "irreverent outsider" mindset.
What I am enjoying about these early pages of issue 18, and have come to realize what I miss most about modern comics in general, is Mr. Byrne's STORYTELLING.
Yes, I adore his art and it initially drew me to him...but his grasp of the Silver Age Marvel universe and the characters in it is unmatched. He brings them (and it) alive like no one else. Sellers got that much right, JB is, at heart, a fan...(like me).

I never have understood the "no backgrounds" criticism.•• There was a period in the early 80s when circumstances forced me to draw fewer backgrounds. It didn't last long but, as you well know, there is something in the mentality of some fans that causes them to latch onto ideas and refuse to let go, even when the support for them has evaporated. I'm convinced, in fact, that the way some insist forests and oceans and clouds "don't count" as backgrounds springs from their need to cling to the mantra "Byrne Never Draws Backgrounds."

Today's page...man oh man, what an amazing rendition of Gladiator. And having Cyclops' optic beam spray out from between his fingers like faucet water--what a cool way to illustrate his invulnerability.
As for Jahf...has he thrown in with the enemy, I wonder? If so, the Guard might have a harder time accomplishing their mission than they expect!

If (as it appears) Jahf does aid the X-men then even Gladiator might have a run for his money...
I like how the beams give the sense (to me at least) of "panels" to divide the characters somewhat
