I'm not very well informed about The Watcher's appearances or powers, so I
only know those two because they are so historic.

RE: "Red Ghost and the Super Apes, table for four."
-------------------

Not sure where it was published but it does remind me how MUCH I love JB's rendering of "dinosaur-hide" early Thing.  LOVED the JB FF issues where he was reverted back.

Esteemed Mr. Byrne, was there any push back from Marvel at that time to either stop you from reverting Ben or to have you return him to his rocky state?

The tale I have literally waited decades to read!

-- Yes, I know it's not actually THE story as originally planned, but the basics I remembered reading in an interview with JB all those years ago are present in today's page. Sweet!!

James J; With ELSEWHEN, I can now view X-MEN 137 (and all X-MEN stories) as WHAT
IF???? tales."

***

Good point. As published, X-Men 137 works better as a "What-if?"

"WHAT IF the Phoenix Force had actually inhabited Jean Grey?"

That story could end with the definitive self-sacrifice of Jean Grey and (since "What-if?" stories are one-shot) no aftermath or follow up.

So annoying... A person in a group that's supposed to be devoted to Byrne fans made a comment about the current page writing, "Age of Apocalypse" followed by laughing emojis. If one joins a group dedicated to the work of a specific artist whose work one supposedly enjoys, at least brush up on the artist's career and such before making ill-informed snarky remarks.

"Age of Apocalypse" used the same idea that Xavier was killed and so Magneto ended up forming the X-Men. I can't say that those involved with that storyline knew about JB's proposed "What If" story that was mentioned in the interview of "The Art of John Byrne" back in 1980, but I would have to think that being that the "Apocalypse" story was spread over the entire line of then-current X-Men titles, involving so many writers and artists, and the X-editors, surely someone in that assemblage was aware of JB's "What If" idea.

So, with ELSEWHEN, JB finally gets to do a take on his earlier idea, and some uniformed "fan" takes a shot at him for ripping off an idea that was actually his to begin with. Sigh!

Naturally, even supposedly big fans can't be expected to know every single aspect of an artist's career, but how about giving some benefit of doubt before making a snotty remark and exposing one's own ignorance?

Edited for typos and clarity.

So far, this issue is flowing like an issue of WHAT IF? sans The Watcher breaking the Fourth Wall.

Loving it!!!!

I'm liking the looks of this - at first a bit 'ugh' over mirror/mirror after 3 seasons of it on Star Trek Discovery (more or less which I enjoyed but am a bit burned out on it now) but a second interpretation of what if Xavier died before forming the X-Men has promise.  The Age of Apocalypse was messy and drove me away from the X-Men (yeah, I held on for a long time through a lot of ugh), this on the other hand has promise.  This Magneto logically wouldn't have been through a lot we've seen 'ours' go through, including any rehab which was largely post-Byrne time.  Looking forward to it.

Funny thing is the first thing that caught my eye on that page was the Watcher looking at his fellow bald guy.  Love that the floor matches up with the source material (X-Men #20 - can't believe I remembered that on my first try).  Too many skip little things like that and I know I appreciate it.

Tim O'N: The Watcher showed up at the end of the Avengers/Defenders war to observe the conclusion.

The Watcher showed up to actually do battle with Captain Mar-Vell.

The Watcher appeared for the Fantastic Four/Invaders team up, and the subsequent Marvel Two-In-One teaming of the Thing and the Liberty Legion.

The Watcher observed the JLA satellite during their battle against Kronos, along with the Avengers.

Marvel Team-Up #127 teamed Spider-Man with the Watcher.

There are probably others; those are just the ones that come to mind.

RE: "Red Ghost and the Super Apes, table for four."

Surprisingly, I don't recall seeing that 'Marvel Milestone' page before - in what title was it published please?

****

It was in FF 358, during the Tom DeFalco and Paul Ryan run. There were 2 JB pin ups, the other was the FF with Silver Surfer and Galactus.
