You are not the only one who loves Gladiator, Brother Joe! I love him, and the entire Legio... erm ... Imperial Guard! Astra, Smasher, and Manta were always characters I wanted to see more of! I was super-delighted to learn that Manta & Kallark were lovers! I hope the Shi'ar kept clone back-ups of the Guard *sob*

Gladiator has come here via some kind of Neal Adams upgrade and I'm in love.
A consistent pleasure in JB written books is a strong sense of cohesion. Somehow, issues seem to pick-up a sense of growth and momentum that reaches backward and forward and even into other titles.
Maybe that sounds quaint or obvious, but I feel like others here will know what I'm talking about --and I have to say it feels amazing to get this sense again, here, at this point --when (basically) all the other titles have been ret-conned out of existence.

That's the first thing I thought of when I read that panel, too.

I have a feeling that Gladiator's task isn't going to be as easy as he thinks it will be.
On another note, the final panel of the previous page, with the assembled X-Man and Imperial Guard has another one of my favourite JB traits, which the way he depicts different characters heights and mannerisms. That little bit of extra care goes a long way towards making the characters feel real.

It’s interesting. I’ve never liked the Legion, but I’ve been a fan of the Imperial Guard since my first introduction to them. Which was before I had ever even heard of the Legion.

Understood, but it felt like he was responsible for the X-men's loss to the IG on the Moon---it's hard to forgive him for that one.
They can all be friends after the X-men wipe the floor with him and his team. :)

I'd be willing to take that compromise! ;-)

Gladiator is not a villain; he's an antagonist, opposing the X-Men for entirely legitimate reasons. We have to keep in mind that he hasn't had the information we readers have.Antagonists aren't necessarily villains and the terms aren't interchangeable.
As for Kitty, I have the feeling this is going to be bad. JB isn't afraid to put his characters through the wringer and it might well be Kitty's turn.

Also, don't forget that JB had the Fantastic Four beating Gladiator (with an assist from Captain America). It's not like Gladiator hasn't been defeated before.

Don’t know what you have in mind, Mark, but Kitty’s atoms pass between the atoms of other objects, and that’s the whole magilla!

OK, here was where my mind was heading: Kitty’s “phasing” could be a byproduct of her “true” power, which is to meld with or absorb the atoms of other objects, maybe akin to the Absorbing Man. And she just hasn’t mastered it yet.
Seemed like a long shot idea.

Sure that was a great story, but the X-men still deserve some saving-face in my cosmic ledger. How many more times can you stand to hear the IG say, "we've beaten you before X-men..." before you lose it?
They may as well be saying, "We killed your Jean Grey once...we can do it again, any time we choose...puny Earthlings."
I would love to see a combination of Cyclops' tactical brilliance, the X-men's team-work, and Prof X's "Greatest Mutant Mind on Earth" be all over the IG like a cheap suit. (Just to balance the ledger, naturally.)
Pride goeth before the fall...and the IG (Gladiator in particular---it's almost his super-power, as the brilliant FF issue showed) are stuffed full of it.

How about 'Pryde cometh before a fall'? :^X
I think Manta is one of the more visually interesting Guardsmen! Modt and Jahf are up there as well.

Alas, poor Manta. Another character I created from the whole cloth, but Chris wrote as somebody else.
