Steven Q. - What about the Judean People's Front?
One wonders (well, I wonder) if the Brotherhood of Evil preceded the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants. Perhaps there was one tiny synchronicity between the Doom Patrol and the X-Men...
Also, while it would be generous to call me even an amateur linguist, magneto is generally sounded as the villain's name. Magneto sort of calls for a hard vowel for the second syllable. Then again, the majority of poly-syllabic words don't have three hard vowels in them in English. So...

I echo the sentiment that this series is like reading Lee/Kirby's X-Men again.
This page covers so many things in X-Men lore that it's hard to list them. And it does it effortlessly and with a fight!

From the first time I read a comic with Magneto, I pronounced it the right way -- but I had a momentary crisis of confidence not long after when I watched the 'A Firestar is Born' episode of Spider-Man and his Amazing Friends, as Firestar uses the 'magnetto' pronunciation.
I think I ended up just sticking with the way I already said it because it just sounded better.

A minor point, but I really like how you drew Quicksilver's hair in the third panel of today's page -- a widow's peak with two distinct cowlicks coming off the sides of the high points. So many, including Kirby, drew it like a weird mustache at the front of his hairline.

Question for John Byrne:
I have been meaning to ask this for years but it always slips the mind. Was the Master in Alpha Flight related in any way to Lucifer and his alien cohorts?
Or were the similarities in appearance mere coincidences?

Coincidence. The Master’s look happened as I struggled to escape from George’s Brother Blood design for TEEN TITANS. Every design I tried looked like a variant on Brother Blood. Years later George told me Blood was his deliberate attempt to design “a John Byrne character”!

This page is doing so much work! Clear parentage for the siblings, a funny bit establishing just how unknown mutants are to Scott, and the pronunciation guide to end so many Marvel debates.
What really stands out for me is how *young* Scott is here. (As he should be.) He's not a bad kid, but he's had a really tough go of things and isn't yet the team leader we know. The Scott of the original timeline has a lot of recent privilege due to Xavier's influence, and it's so interesting to see him without that influence here. It really makes you believe he could turn out differently with the wrong mentor.

Another character I cannot wait to see in the alternate universe is Hank McCoy.
Will he be portrayed as the traditional loquacious teammate or the rough voiced guy from X-MEN #1?

It's the third panel with Scott almost falling into the yawning abyss for me...

JB - Are you actively drawing the characters in the Watcher's alternate timeline to be a little younger than the present day versions?
