I could see that. His first work at DC after just 3 years in the biz (and, I believe his first team book, period) was BATMAN AND THE OUTSIDERS.

Vinny: Yeah, BATO was the first gig (Although it was very almost Aquaman) I can definitely see the 'model' of JLGL but also Jim Aparo in the linework (Who was likely part of the reference pack)

JB: When I started on Superman, Dick Giordano gave me a copy of the style guide. I still have it.
I have no idea how you managed to hold it together, John with the thought of moving to Superman. The pressure must have been enormous. Then add to that the prospect of Dick inking your work...Just holding the pencil straight. I super admire your work ethic, the fun you bring to a project but here, in this instance the maturity to do the work. Amazing. JB: Looking at Jose’s beautiful drawings was almost enough to make me seek honest work—like as a plumber. I think, when it comes Jose's work, that is a natural response. I poorly recall an anecdote that while visiting the DC offices, Mobius saw Jose's work and asked who he used as models, to find out that it was out of his head was remarkable. [As an anecdote this is more 'An' than 'Ekdotos' as I'm second guessing that it wasn't Milo Manara, rather than Jean Giraud] |

Comparing Garcia-Lopez and JB is definitely a whole apples/oranges thing. I think of it like Kubrick and John Carpenter - or more specifically, Kubrick's Shining and Carpenter's oeuvre. The former is a master filmmaker bringing all his chops to a genre exercise, while the latter lives inside the genre - so Kubrick's film is beautiful, if somewhat remote, while Carpenter's horror films are so alive they sort of hum.

I think of it like Kubrick and John Carpenter - or more specifically, Kubrick's Shining and Carpenter's oeuvre.
Interesting analogy, don't know if I agree with it though.
But I do give a very similar answer when asked who is my favorite director: "Officially, it's Kubrick. But, just between you and me, it's Carpenter."

Jim Shooter used to tell a similar anecdote with John Buscema. Big John came by the office to pick up some reference for Superman/Spider-Man and was given the Garcia Lopez sheets and he couldn't believe the guy was so good.
And supposedly he never, ever praised other artists (Shooter tried to further impress him with some Neal Adams pages, but wasn't successful).
Truly an artist's artist.

I'm reading the old SHOWCASE PRESENTS JONAH HEX, and it's just glorious to see the Jose Luis Garcia-Lopez art--it's probably even more impressive in b&w than the original comics.
But I'd still like to see it in color!
How this has never been reprinted in some prestige edition is beyond me.

My understanding that both, the Mobius and Buscema
stories occured, having heard some slight differences in
the details.
- Mbius asked if Jose used models, was told "non" by
Helfer, as which point Mobius exclaimed, "Sonuvabitch".
- Buscema was so taken with Jose's work that he attempted
to get Jose to ink his pencils on the Supderman/Spider-
Man Treasury book.
Interesting note is that I've spoken to Jose about my
love of his original work, over the published colors and
he underplayed it, stated that "it was always drawn to be
colored". I adore the Jonah Hex stuff, but prefer the
Showcase volumes, to the original (or, later, digitally
colored) books.
