...if Cyclops' beam "push back at him" via Newton's-Law-like to slow him down, then aren't that pushing him horizontally every time he uses them?•• Of course. That's why he always braces himself before firing his beams. There has also been discussion that the beam, somewhat illogically, increases in strength as it gets further from Scott. That's how he can do some of the damage he does without blowing the back of his head off. (Careful, tho! Down this path lies such questions as "How can he see if the beams are always coming out of his eyes?")

Cyclops bracing himself before firing also looks cooler!
(Yes, "cool" and Cyclops belong in the same sentence, dammit.)

I always imagined that the eye blasts come from "somewhere", since Scott's brain is where a mutant eye-beam gland would have to be located. Therefore the eyes are portals.
No one wants the first time the eye blasts occur to end with an equal-but-opposite head smash into pavement.

It was SO obvious Kirby had "borrowed" Scott's power from Gort, the robot in THE DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL, that it almost put me off the brand new book. Almost. I got over it pretty fast. But it's important to note that Kirby's use of Gort's beams was so exact, Scott was even able to open his visor and let the power "build up" before unleashing it. It took a while for opening the visor to mean the instant release of the beams. And, yes, as Michael notes, it used to be very much Cyclops/Scott who was the COOL one. Dark, troubled, brooding. Gee, who does THAT sound like?

When I finally watched some of the X-MEN: APOCALYPSE movie, I was struck by how awkward and goofy the actor chosen to play Cyclops was in the role. Was that intentional? Sheesh!

He's a minor character. Jean, Storm, and especially Wolverine are the main characters. It's a wonder Scott is in those movies at all.

Diminishing Cyclops as a leader (and even killing him off at one point) was perhaps the worst crime of the films.
Similar to the Lord of the Rings films---although I did not particularly care for their treatment of the source material---I was at least relived that the franchise was not presented in a laughable fashion, and attracted a new audience.
Although, to be fair, the "Logan" movie, while not X-men canon in any way-shape-or-form, was still an an enjoyably gritty quasi-western to my eyes---worth a 2nd watch. A nice little adult "What If" story. A good send-off for Jackman, who I thought did well by Wolverine for the most part.
I digress (again).

As I have said, it’s not often we can point to the EXACT MOMENT a character loses his/her standing with the fans, but we can with Cyclops. Go back to that early Savage Land adventure Chris and I did. Pause for what was supposed to be a deep soul-searching moment for Scott. Except Chris went off-plot and turned it into a totally out-of-character feminist rant from Storm—and Scott became a jerk. A scene that should have had fans weeping in sympathy with his pain, and instead, of many of them, one of Marvel’s finest, noblest characters was gutted.

Jackman’s Logan never read to me as anything other than a pretty boy copping an attitude.

Fair.
Trying to see the positive side...it could have been much worse. Much, much worse. (Like with Cyclops).

Well... Wolverine could have been played by Paul Rudd (who was excellent in the role he DID play!)

I don’t think Hollywood was ready for a short, ugly guy as a superhero.
