Mr. Byrne...Does Kitty “breathe” while in her phased state?
I picture a scenario where she is pulling a stunt like ‘swimming through the earth’...but she has to get out quickly because she can’t breathe while doing it. Is this how you see it?

To be honest, I’m playing a bit fast and loose with Kitty’s ability to breathe whilst phasing. Much of it, of course, comes from the lack of available air in what’s around her.

I would prefer that Kitty (and anyone she is touching) not need to breathe while phasing. Is Wolverine holding his breath now?

There's a sequence in 17 where Kitty pulls Scott underground. She tells him to hold his breath, but he's in pain by the time they get where they're going. Kitty, tho, is fine.

JB: Possibly nitpicky question... Should there be any sounds effects for Cyclops blasting Dark Phoenix back on page 5? Normally, it's sorta a "ZARK" sound but maybe it should be something more extreme if, in fact, he is letting loose with more power than usual?"

Did I use a sound effect? Let me check. Hm. No. Guess I didn't think one was needed.

JB,
Do you have any particular rules on when you choose to add sound effects or not? I ask, as a long-time artist but budding writer...

As you may be aware, for several decades I eschewed sound effects (and captions). Coming back to them in this series has been something of a re-learning experience. In the Past I’ve used SFX more for their visual impact than their storytelling. If the image delivers without a sound effect, then I won’t use one.

Interesting.
Yes, I've noticed how the SFX have been designed into your work.
Thanks for the quick response!

I love the scene with Kitty and Wolverine underground!
...and the rest, too...that goes without saying.

JB: You may be conflating here with times when I have said I do not try to keep the pattern [of Ben Grimm's rocks] consistent, except on the face.

Sounds right to me-- thanks! And I'd figured it took a while to achieve that kind of zen while drawing. It must be an experience to look down and see what you've been doing while your mind was on other things. :)
