I don't know that the Phoenix Force's innate need was to destroy, any more than it is Galactus's innate need to destroy - the two greatest manifestations of the Phoenix's power that we saw was the saving of the universe and the destruction of the D'Bari system - and the latter was only to save herself as she was severely weakened, or as the narrative put it --- hungry.
