For a trace job, apart from the head, he blew it on the proportions rather badly (the easiest part to do). The chest is actually smaller, and the legs are shorter and weird.  Kryptonian quad-blasting seems to have occured, judging from the upper thighs.
The linework is also comparatively quite dead.  JB drew muscles, the fake was just aping the shapes.  Reminds me of old astronomical drawings of the moon where they tried to capture the shapes they were seeing, but didn't actually know what they were.

I looked up the listing on eBay, searching under "John Byrne original art." That seller is one shady fellow.  Only 24 feedback, with a negative calling him shady, and the guy has already changed his user name recently.

His other auctions are mostly "original" comic book art nudie pics.

Edited to add: I sent the guy a message to ask him to clarify if he is actually claiming that is JB's original artwork and signature. I'll report back if he responds.

One of the downsides of crap like this is that when I was regularly attending conventions people would bring me forgeries to sign, and I would decline. This would all too often generate a Big Bad Byrne story, as if the fault was somehow mine!

The original for that MoS page went for around $20k earlier in the year.

I wonder what Jim sold it for.

Again raises the old spectre of whether the artists should get a percentage of subsequent sales.

Honestly, I wonder how much you parted for these pages each time I make a purchase. Note - I didn't buy the MoS page, I just buy FF pages at this point (along with the occasional "Byrne-verse" favorites like DU).

It's neat to have childhood favorites hanging on the wall though!

The walls of my Studio stand in mute testimony to that!

Hah - the coloring mistake of the original made the tracer assume that the piece of cape was actually a part of his hand!

The forger did a really shitty job on the bottom portion of the cape.  A dead give away it is a fake.
