There's a great line from (of all things, the otherwise pretty lousy) "Final Crisis" by Grant Morrison; in narration from Turpin as he's being slowly possessed by the spirit of Darkseid: "How can you fight the ocean?"
That's basically how the 2018 GOP does things - they keep pushing and pressing and throwing such an overwhelming amount of stuff at you that eventually you just lose the will to fight.

To quote from a current BBC news article on the topic:
"The conservative president has his conservative nominee, and the conservative majority in the Senate is predisposed to put that man on the Supreme Court for life."

=========================================== David,
I going to say that this country is fucked for the next generation or so.
Any crimes that the Rump administration have committed will be wiped away.
Roe vs. Wade will probably be overturned
Minorities and Women's rights will be trampled on.
Racist assholes will be embolden to be more asshole-ish (if that's a word).

Re: Roe v. Wade: The Republicans do not want a federal abortion ban. Abortion is the most potent electoral issue in this country's history. If there was ever a federal ban on abortion, and the pro-life issue was off the table, why on earth would working class white people vote Republican? If you think politicians care about ideology over re-election, you're naïve.
What will more likely happen is that the states will be given more leeway on abortion law, in both directions. This way not only can the national Republican party campaign on abortion, but the state levels candidates can too. Republicans in red states will be able to campaign on all of the restrictions they pass on clinics, and in blue states they'll be able to campaign against the rabid baby-killing Democrats who are in charge. And the Democrats will happily let them do it because they'll be able to campaign on women's rights, in the same way, from the other side.
But all of this voter manipulation only works if the issue remains on the table, and nothing decisive is done.

If (when?) Roe is overtuned and leads to a Federal ban on abortion, the GOP will still be able to use it as a campaign issue/fundraising tactic, they'll just switch from fighting to ban abortion to fighting to keep it banned.
"Keep voting for us or the evil liberals will bring back baby-killing!"

There's almost nothing conservative about many of these modern Republicans; most are reactionary radicals succeeding under the fanatics are the most motivated principle. A large swath of apathy and 'they're both equally bad' is the real basis... keep throwing the mud and confusion to drum up the apathy.Oh, and 'redistricting'.
People have been set on the whole stages of a fetus business for a couple decades. I wouldn't even waste a moment to try and win anyone over to one absolute side or the other on that one. I've stayed where I am for awhile; anti-abortion generally/ideally but knowing enough to say those directly involved with all the factors should be who makes any such decisions within the allowable limits. Hyper-emotional reactionism at a distance or from a religious dogma direction is no way to make such decisions.
Every sub-minority is being divided up for political exploitation or pitting against another, and meanwhile major news on Russian spies uncovered in Europe gets almost zero U.S. coverage.

It must be especially enjoyable to Trump and his supporters that he manages to insert someone some Republican leaders warned him against picking. He is looking more powerful, and women less powerful right now.
Collins went on at great length to explain away her support, Murkowski less so to explain her not falling in line. Neither will end any hysterics by the various extremes. Things are just becoming more unbalanced with this appointment. Kavanaugh is radical in some of the opinions he has expressed but you'll just have to 'think' to use a term Collins and Murkowski both used to reassure the fearful that maybe he won't be radical in any decisions when part of the SCOTUS. Trust is a pretty rare thing these days though, especially after refusal to consider the conservative nominee Obama made as part of his job back when he was president which set the table for rejoicing among extreme religious nuts and alt-right 'think' tanks.

It is an interesting development in American political life that the entire Supreme Court is either Roman Catholic or Jewish. It wasn’t that long ago that members of either group wouldn’t have been even considered for federal office.

What kind of sick mind goes after the people who aren't even in power and will not be in power?? The hate that is raising it's ugly head in this country of late is beyond disturbing. This is where Trump's presidency has taken America.
Dangerous people aren’t at the border. They’re already here.
