It strikes me as a horrible business model for the Mystery Letter proprietors not to do everything in their power to make it unambiguously clear what every piece of mail they send is. 95% of the mail I get these days goes straight into the Recycling Bin, and I'm confident I'm not alone. If I can't identify what a piece of mail is immediately, there's almost no chance I'm going to bother reading it to find out.

I have to wonder how many people paying for this service are going to be disappointed when they learn that their gifts went straight into the trash.

But all this could've been avoided if fans just remain fans.

This is true (not just with regards to our host, but everyone).

I have had the privilege of communicating with Ernie Hudson over time. Via e-mail. Very open, very affable. However, we're not friends. It would be stretching it even to call him an acquaintance. He's an actor whose work I enjoy - and who I have been lucky enough to receive communications from.

I got to chat to some Marvel UK editors many years ago at the Bristol Comic Con. They were very affable? I was in Bristol for the day, an overnight stay in fact. In my mind, would it have been nice to perhaps ask one of them for a drink in the hotel bar later that evening? Yes. But I chose not to as I think you have to keep things separate.

I talk to my barber about films whenever I visit him. Haircut takes about 5 minutes, then we spend about 15 minutes chatting. We talk a lot about films. However, as cordial and as good as it all is, I'd not be happy if he signed me up for something.

Not meaning to pile on ... I think Eric didn't mean any harm at all ... but this reminds me of the Michael Douglas film The Game, where his brother Sean Penn secretly gets a company to foist an elaborate series of hoaxes designed to threaten his life. At the end of the movie Douglas learns the truth and thanks his brother, because the Game made him value life more. He even ends up with one of the actresses of the hoax. All's well that ends well, never mind the PTSD.

I just can't get over how cruel it is to send "mystery packages" like this.  It completely plays on the goodwill of the "fruit of the month club" concept and creates anxiety instead of delight.  How does this company survive doing this nonsense?

And to send this to JB, who has received actual lunatic fringe mail?  Ugh.

And even after you know this is attached to a real person, a forum member, someone who has apologized and admitted to not realizing how big a deal it would be, you still pile on.

Classless.  Borderline cruel.

Pitiful.

Horseshit. No one is piling on anyone. They're having a discussion. On a discussion forum. And Eric can choose to ignore the entire thread if he wants,. just like you should have.

Agreed Mike. Gives you a great insight into some peoples personalities....

Nobody wants to be first...but everybody wants to be second.

Would I like to receive this gift? Probably not.

Would I be concerned about it? Probably not.

Would I post on an internet form about it and create an ensuing discussion? Probably not.

Would I share my problems about it with the sender? Yes.

Pubically? No.

Privately? Yes.

I think you'll find I commented earlier in the thread, so be quiet please.

Thanks

No, but I do thank you for asking politely.

A question for JB. Has this experience made you consider no longer inviting fans into your home?
