JB, the MPC has replied to my request about deleting your address from their system and complied. In my order history your name remains, but there a X's where your address would be. I'm willing to forward my email correspondence with them to Jim if you like. All my best, Eric.

Data and data protection is a very weird thing. i once started receiving bank statements at my address for someone that was not me. I sent them back to the bank, saying the person did not live at the address and had never lived at the address (I bought my house from the original owner).
They kept coming, so I opened one to see what they were and confirmed that yes, they were bank statements.
I decided to go to the bank and find out what was going on - they said they would sort it but by this time I needed more than this - I needed to know what had actually led to this, especially as my previous requests to get the name removed had been ignored.
The bank refused. So I refused to leave until I got a response. It took more than 30 minutes for the bank to realise that I was being serious and eventually the bank manager arrived and took me in a room to explain.
The bank had screwed up and put my address on someone else's account.
Once someone has someone else's data, it instantly loses security. Whether by fair means or foul, mistakes can happen. Someone is giving both mine and my wife's phone numbers to car accident claim firms because we keep getting calls that when I answer enthusiastically and say 'Wow, yeah, what date do you have' they hang up.
On the other point, from the description of the actual package, what I can gather is that all the package does is create confusion over an extended period of time and then say 'This is where the packages come from'. I actually cannot see what the point of such a thing is. It doesn't even lead to anything. Not a drive in a fast car, not a trip in a helicopter, nothing! The only outcome there would be from me would be confusion (and possibly concern) through the whole process followed by 'What the heck were you thinking?'

I think what is being lost here is JB's permitted reaction. His privacy, as clearly stated, was violated. The intention was not to do that but that is inconsequential. All that matters is the feeling that was generated. He's allowed to feel that way and there was no genuine apology, just repeated attempts to justify and people coming to his defence. Same justification for movie stars not being allowed to have a private life as they have chosen that career. JB didn't name names, guilt did. This kind of reminds me of he movie The Game, on a smaller scale.

Blair, There eventually was an apology. How genuine it may have been I do not know I'm not a mind reader.

Our addresses are not private, they're a matter of public record. A quick internet search revealed John Byrne's address. The fact is, anyone who owns property, or even a business, is searchable on the internet these days. JB has given enough information away here that it's not really very difficult.
Eric decided to get a gift for a business proprietor that he's done thousands of dollars of business with. Had even been to the proprietor's place of business in this case. Likely thought he knew enough about him that he thought this would be a fun gift for the guy. It really does seem like something that would be right up JB's alley.

************************************************************ ********************** Anthony, only one person's opinion and mind-reading ability matter in this situation and he's already voiced it...
And Mark, just because you do business with someone, doesn't give you a sense of entitlement....
I'm a public servant but I wouldn't want anyone invading my home just because they pay taxes and feel entitled....

Blair, Where is it a sense of entitlement!? A misunderstanding of their relationship (obviously!!), but a sense of entitlement!? C'mon. Look, I get that JB's gotten some creepy stuff over the years, that he's shared here ("The Letter"), so maybe he's more sensitive than average. That would make sense. Not sure where legally using the USPS equates to invading your home, either. I have issues with 95% of my mail if that's the case.

This is one of the most fascinating threads I've read on the JBF recently. It really gives you some insight on how people's minds work.

Perhaps you missed the post when he did. The post came after JB's last post on page three of this thread. No opinion or mind reading is required. It's a fact that he did eventually apologize.
It's effectiveness with JB is something different. It's not for me to say how JB felt about the sincerity of the apology.

The story JB told about Walt and Weezi Simonson reminded me of the first episode of "Everybody Loves Raymond" when Marie freaks out that Raymond has enrolled them in a "cult" because he got his parents a "Fruit of the Month Club" subscription for Christmas.

Eric seems like a good guy. But all this could've been avoided if fans just remain fans. Support the work you like, appreciate any interaction you have with the artist and don't assume a deep friendship just because he/she gave you some of his/her time. In Eric's case, he's been to JB's house. I've been to a lot of people's houses for social gatherings, but that doesn't make me their friend (at least not by my definition of friend).
Then you take into account that JB is a celeb and has experienced all kinds of weirdness with fandom, common sense says the mystery gift was a really bad idea.
