I just called the lady I'd spoken to at the Post Office to tell her the mystery had been solved. She was instantly appalled. "There's a website that does that?" she exclaimed. "Has everybody forgotten the Unabomer?"

Ran across this Blacklist trailer ("I can't trust you") this morning after reading this thread yesterday, and I couldn't help but envision Red's words coming out of JB's mouth:

Regardless of intent, or the nature of the mysterious parcels & packages, or how you may feel about the Forum member in question... he learned of JB's actual street address and used it without permission.

Some posters here seem to be missing or glossing over that important point.

That is true, Shaun.

Anxiety aside, in this world so many addresses are passed on, hence junk mail. I mean, whenever I've subscribed to a magazine, I seem to be bombarded with junk mail for weeks afterwards. And when I check the "paper trail", it's usually a company not a million miles from the publisher of the magazine.

It has been glossed over.

'Should I contact the courier?'

***

I seem to have, for some mysterious reason, a subscription to Vanity Fair Magazine.  At first, I thought I was just getting a free issue, to be followed by a sales pitch; but the magazine comes, month after month.  I once spent a good chunk of an afternoon on the phone trying to get the mailings to cease, but just got passed around from department to department.  Now I just throw it away, still in the wrapper, every month.

So yes, unexpected deliveries can turn into a big time sink.  (I also dread the day that Vanity Fair decides to bill me for all of these magazines!)

I can imagine how JB feels. I flipped out when a former forum member invaded my privacy.  This person believe that because we corresponded twice thru email. They had the right to search for my contact information online and called me at home. This person even went so far as to travel from their home. To try and meet another member of this forum. Without being invited.

I don't know about Vanity Fair, specifically, but newspapers around the country have resorted to creating phantom subscribers out of real people in order to increase their circulation numbers, and therefore holding off declines in their ad rates.  If newspapers are doing it, it makes sense that magazines are too; they both face the same challenges, after all.

See, I don't understand why ANYONE would do that.

I've often said that I'd be happy to meet a JBF forum member if I visited a particular city or town. We'd discuss it beforehand. And any invitation to my house for a beer or anything would be discussed. I wouldn't appreciate anyone showing up or looking me up.

First off, JB I am incredibly sorry for this. I didn’t thinkI was in violation of your trust. That was not my intent at all. I neverdreamed the gift would be interpreted that way. I apologize still further ifyou feel this did not come in a timely manner. I know you don’t have my directcontact information or I suspect you would have called or sent me an emaildirectly expressing your distaste for what I did. You used the only method ofcommunication available and I felt that outing myself was a suitable responsethat your message was received. I normally don’t check the JBF on weekends. However, on Sunday I got an email from a Facebook friend that knows I havereceived stuff from The Mysterious Package company and he was telling mesomeone sent a package to you and the forum is erupting. This was 30 minutesbefore taking my kids to swimming lessons so I quickly glanced at the thread andsaw the last lines, scanned up to see “trust violated” and responded. I hadhoped outing myself and my conduct over the years would allow people tounderstand my intentions were to provide a unique birthday present and notviolate the trust you have given me. I was not seeking to gain sympathy byidentifying myself as I am not the one that feels wronged. I didn’t know anyother way to express that I “got the message” since we cannot communicatedirectly.

If I have seemed noticeably absent today it is because Ifeel horrible about what happened, I have been extremely busy at work and Ihave been working with the MPC to get any and all references to you and youraddress removed from their system. They assure me privacy and confidentialityare paramount at their company and that no member or customer information isever released, but I am requesting they go this extra step due to how you feel.I am doing all I can to make it right. I know full well there is most likelyirreparable damage to our friendship, but I assure you I was just trying to dosomething unique and nice for you. I never dreamed it would be such an unwanteditem and didn’t think sending something to you via the mail would be off limitssince I had sent you some art for your birthday the previous year. Again, Iapologize for doing anything that would make you feel like you made a mistake intrusting me.

I will certainly let you know the outcome of removing allreferences to you and your address from the MPC and hope there is a possibilityof forgiveness. I’m not sure what else to do and realize that I have mostlikely and inadvertently lost the privilege of calling you a friend. Again, Iam sorry.

An aspect of this that I think many board members are missing is that John has a level of celebrity.  When I was reading his first post, I immediately assumed he'd attracted the attention of a person who had reacted to a "bad Byrne story" in a psychotic way.  I wasn't reminded of the Unibomber as much as John Lennon.  The deck of cards shaped object particularly frightened me.  I enjoy a small level of notoriety in my home town, a big fish in a small pond sort of thing.  Even with that modest level of "celebrity" I've experienced some scary incidences where people went off the rails because I didn't give them the attention they thought they deserved.

Eric, I think you had nothing but the best of intent here and I hope you are able to take this in the spirit of helpfulness that it is intended, but I think you've assumed a stronger relationship than what exists (certainly JB can correct me if I'm wrong).

We are fans of JB's work and he is gracious enough to extend some of us (in this case you) certain privileges as a thank you for supporting him and his work. But he has yet to call me to catch up on how my week is going and I haven't a clue what his phone number is, so we are not "friends". I feel like I know him because of his work and what he posts here, but the reality is he wouldn't know me if he hit me with his car. I think you overstepped your bounds in sending anything to JB's house without his prior permission.

I think it is great that you are working with the company to undo some of the damage that's been done and hope it helps to mend fences. I know all too well the awful feeling of letting down someone that you admire.

As for JB, I can only imagine how deeply concerning it would be to receive "mystery packages" when you've had so many weird encounters with "fans". In your shoes, I would have been terrified.

Peace to all.

"I seem to have, for some mysterious reason, a subscription to Vanity Fair Magazine."

...

Interesting. The last 4 months I've been receiving In Style a woman's fashion magazine.
I've been racking my brain trying to figure out some kind of connection. They have my first name misspelled on the label, leaving me a small clue. If I see that same misspelling somewhere ,somehow I may have found the culprit.
It gets tossed in the recycling bin when it comes.
What's going on out there?
