I remember that situation! Made worse by putting her image as a vampire in a Dr. Strange comic (A Christian pop artist as an evil, supernatural character in a comic based on the occult arts... EEP!).

From what I have read SLJ gave them permission as long as he got to
play Nick Fury in any future movies.

I also thought that I read something similar to that. However, it appears that I was mistaken. Here is the link to SLJ's actual statement on the matter.

http://www.mtv.com/news/1538752/movie-file-lindsay-lohan-nic k-cannon-johnny-depp-mark-wahlberg-kristen-bell-more/

And here is his full quote from the article.

"It’s a bird! It’s a plane! It’s … mutha-effin’ Samuel L. Jackson? According to the 57-year-old actor, one of the few things he has left to accomplish in Hollywood is to fulfill a lifelong desire to become a superhero (we guess voicing Frozone in “The Incredibles” doesn’t count). He’s now trying to find a script. “I see [Marvel movie producer] Avi Arad a lot, because we live in the same neighborhood,” Jackson said. “I express my interest in [working with him]. I always wanted to be Iron Man, because he was always like the rich dude who created this whole thing.” He’s not really kept as a superhero, he just creates stuff to make himself a superhero as a rich guy.” Although an “Iron Man” film is on Marvel’s fast-track, Jackson is doubtful that he’d ever be asked to play Tony Stark. The actor is, however, hopeful that Arad will listen to his pleas regarding another veteran Marvel hero with a film in development who was recently given a comic-book makeover to resemble none other than … Samuel L. Jackson! “Nick Fury would be great,” Jackson said of the hard-boiled S.H.I.E.L.D. agent. “I’ve been reading Nick Fury since when I was a kid. I collect comics. … I’m kind of geeky.” …"

I just realized all that bare skin on Quitely's Queen is supposed to be an X, only he didn't bring the top point of her shorts high enough to make it clear.

The pose and facial expression read to me as contemptuous. That's something I seem to see a lot in Quitely's superhero work. Like that shot of Superman "sitting on a cloud," looking back over his shoulder at the viewer with a Pretty great, aren't I? expression on his face.

Quitely is a superb artist, but all his superhero work leaves me feeling vaguely deflated. The grandeur is lacking.

I recall reading an interview with Morrison around the time that All Star Superman was being published where he said that Quitely doesn't really like drawing superhero comics. If I find the link to the interview, I will post it.

How about Milligan and Allred using Princess Diana in X-Statix?   Not just her likeness but actually including her as a character that had come back from the dead. (eep!)

Amazingly this got scripted, pencilled, inked, edited and solicited before the plug was pulled and the issue was redrawn/story tweaked.  You'd think *someone* in that process would have piped up and said it might not be a good idea and Buckingham Palace might have some objections.  The original pages survive -- at least some of them, as they surfaced in an auction recently.

edit: Original title of the story was "Di Another Day".  Yeesh.

Marvel wasn't in all that good shape at the time (c. 2003, no movie or Disney money to prop them up) so having the Royal Family draining their coffers might have finished them.   :-)

Shaun Barry wrote, "Sorry, I have to be a stickler... that picture on Page 1 is most assuredly NOT Faye Dunaway... that's Hilary Duff, who was aping BONNIE & CLYDE for a somewhat recent photo shoot. Brian Hague, you might want to update that with a more accurate picture."

Sure enough. Post in haste, repent in leisure...

Conner, your post was accurate, but I didn't read it as, "You've posted a photo of the wrong person." I just looked at the picture and agreed with the sentiment that, yeah, Bonnie did kind of look like Wendy, the Good Little Witch in that photo...

Thanks for the correction, guys.

Rob, reading your post, I got the impression Marvel didn't print that issue, yet I could still recall their having gone through with it. Looking online, it turns out Marvel did print that comic (X-Statix #13,) with only minor, superficial changes to the dialogue and art to alter the Princess Diana character's identity. The supposedly resurrected Princess Diana became Henrietta Hunter, a made-up pop-star back from the dead. The comic nevertheless still contained references to Princess Diana's charity work and campaign against landmines.

One more dose of bad taste from the pinhead, frat boys-'r-us bunch of clowns that, long, long ago used to be Marvel Comics.

Also, post number 5800.

Paul Gulacy is well known for using celebrity likenesses in his work.  Kirk Douglas and Woody Allen in SABRE, Michael Caine and Woody Allen (again) in a Black Widow story in MARVEL PREVIEW with (I forgot which) either Lesley Ann Warren or Natalie Wood as Natasha, and numerous people popping up in MASTER OF KUNG FU.  I LOVED all of that!  Are all those instances lawsuit fodder?  And what about MAD MAGAZINE--are likenesses fair play if only used in parody?

Is Sam Jackson/Nick Fury a different case since he was a recurring character (and possible headliner)?

I remember that, too. Morrison saying we should be "grateful" Quitely was doing the work, or words to that effect.

Some very rude thoughts drifted thru my brain at the time.

I saw a documentary on Quitely recently,he doesn`t work at home, but in a hovel in the city,if he works through the night he showers in the local railway station.I thought it was a strange thing to do! I`m all for avoiding distractions, but making your working life unpleasant just seems counter-productive!

I think Barry Windsor-Smith used Clint Eastwood as his model for Hawkeye in Avengers #98-100.
