Hearing JB's voice, it struck me how much he sounded like a former
colleague of mine from Toronto -- not saying all Canadians, former or
otherwise, sound alike!

Coincidentally, I was chatting today with a gal pal from Art College. British born, like me, she has also lived in Canada since the Fifties. I don't remember exactly how the conversation found its way around to the topic, but at one point we were discussing the different accents we've encountered in family and friends over the years. Since our ACA days she has been very complimentary about what she calls my "beautiful speaking voice," and commented today that one of the first things she noticed about me was that I had no trace of a Canadian accent. Not entirely true. I did have the "eh?" and made a conscious effort to get rid of it once I located myself permanently south of the 49th Parallel. But no "oat" and "aboat" for me! Probably the moderating influence of my parents' English accents.
