I regret reducing your commission to the level of receiving sexist comments, JB, but it sure is pretty!!!

I like that your signature on commission pieces is noticeable, but doesn't distract from the drawing. Some artists like to write their names in the middle of the artwork, use a different color marker or just makes it too big.

JB, regarding your signature:
Do you always sign your covers? I can think of a few (IRON MAN 197 and POWER MAN & IRON FIST 119 for example) where there's no signature at all.

I always sign my covers, tho sometimes I blend it into the art, just for funzies. And sometime the gnomes in Production would conspire to hide it behind titles and other such cover copy. That happened more than once on XHY.

Why are so many fans apparently unable to accept the intrinsic value, the glimpse behind the curtain, of an unfinished piece? Pencils -- so rare!! -- show up, and an inker must be found. If the artist himself does not wish to finish a job, someone else can do it! Depresses the heck out of me! |

I have a JSA jam piece done by Don Kramer, Steve Sadowski, and Leonard Kirk. All in pencil. NO way would I ever get someone to ink it, even if it was for free. IF I ever felt the need to see it in inked form, I'd want them to use a lightbox so I could preserve the pencils.

I love pencils, I can't figure out that thinking myself, Kevin. Everything is inked, it's a treat to see something different.

I'm reminded again of a fan at a New York con, a few decades back, who showed me a piece of original art he'd just purchased from another artist. He complained that the artist had used a razor to scratch the surface to produce an effect. I told him he should think about collecting prints, instead of originals. This is a problem with a lot of fans, I think. They don't understand the Process, and want the piece "finished." Sometimes even colored, right on the art!!

I think having a pencil piece is so beautiful and educational by itself. Definitely something I wouldn't want to cover up.

Very cool piece.
It's rather like seeing a deleted scene from a film you liked with the directors commentary. You understand why the scene was cut from the film but it's still cool to see nonetheless!

JB, so in the two examples I gave earlier, did production just take your signature off the finished product?

The process is the cool bit! That's where the magic happens.
One of the reasons why I love the pricing plan that artists, like yourself have. (Where an action page or one that has Wolverine front and centre will run steadily out of my price range but quiter pages with more normal people in them go for loads less.) Some of those pages have a lot more going for them in terms of things that can be learned from.
