OK, far be it from me to disparage the work writers do, and frankly I could care less that they have top billing nowadays. However, is anybody interested in buying one of these for $125?
That's right, it's an IDW Writer's Edition.

JB: X-MEN is currently selling around 180,000 per month. That's
slightly higher than the sales Chris and I got when we killed Phoenix.
Most of the rest of the time, we were lower, and an inch ahead of
cancelation.*

seller, the biggest draw in comics. It doesn't, as you point out, look at
the bigger picture.
It's like someone comparing the numbers of HOW I MET YOUR
MOTHER at its peak to MASH and CHEERS in their first seasons. The
numbers might be similar but it's hardly a fair comparison to the
numbers the latter two series earned at their peaks.

There is a historical revisionism at play that the X-Men were always the X-MEN -- in other words, not a "cool" cult book but a top seller, the biggest draw in comics. It doesn't, as you point out, look at the bigger picture.••• Right there is the origin of the "Byrne's stuff doesn't sell any more" self-fulfilling prophecy. When I took on the FF i boosted the sales from around 190,000 to 250/275,000. But around the same time, X-MEN climbed to 400,000. Retailers -- still barely more than dealers at that point -- looked only at the current numbers, and saw my FF selling 150,000 less than X-MEN. They did not compare this to the FF sales before I arrived, or, even more significantly, the sales of X-MEN when I left (125,000 on a good month).

When comparing sales figures from say 1984 to 2014 the one thing
need to keep in mind, HAS THE PIE REALLY GOTTEN SMALLER?
(these aren't real numbers, this is just me pondering)
Lets say in 1984 Marvel published a total of 35 books and had a total
of 5 million copies sold at 75 cents a piece.
Now in 2014, Marvel publishes 100 books and has a total of 7 million
copies sold at $3.99.
There maybe be more people reading comics. Marvel might really be
in good shape, financially. The money is just spread over more books.

Kitty Pryde was still new to the X-Men, and having an older Kate Pryde walk around an apocalyptic New York City without any explanation was mind blowing. A perfect kick off to an iconic story
