The panel with the Sentinel peering through the torn ceiling is just awesome. The chest light makes it extra eerie -- complemented by some excellent colouring. The sickly yellow of the foreground characters adds to the eerieness.

I was surprised at how big Claremont and Wein's roles were. They both had multiple lines and got their faces on camera quite a bit for a cameo.

Maybe they'll be discovered!

Just incredible storytelling on these pages. Consider the dozens of
character relationships in these two issues that are conveyed with
crystal clarity by facial expressions, body language, and clear staging.
All while enhancing and accelerating the telling of this complex plot
through one action sequence after another.

I can't think that any artist could have stepped in for these two now-
famous issues and made them seem so effortless. Other greats could
have got the story across, but who else could have made it so rich with
character-- these crowded shots have shadings of character and story
playing differently on every face.

Of my "generation," JRjr, George Perez, Michael Golden, to name but three.

Of the "generation" before --- the list is endless!!

I'm a huge John Buscema fan - I've often wondered what he could have done with the art in this story

I should have written more specifically because I know these guys and more could have done the job beautifully. What I meant to say was that I don't think they could have just "stepped in" for these 2 issues, working from a written plot and done all the dozens of subtle characterizations as well-- not because they weren't skilled enough, but because this was really a great example of how John Byrne is as much (or more) a Writer who Draws than a Penciller who Writes. The characterizations all seem exceedingly fitting-- built, I think on how much you had invested in working on them for as long as you had.

Well said Mark.

(Aside: I recall that a few years after Barry Windsor-Smith adapted 'Tower Of The Elephant' in Conan the Barbarian #4, John Buscema did his version in Savage Sword #24 (with a higher page count) It was cool to see the two different takes on the same material.
The story "Jewels Of Gwahlur" was done by at least two different artists as well.)
