What strikes me about those pages with the text removed is that no words are necessary at all. The story across each of those pages is absolutely clear.
Love them.

Steve D: "The new Rolling Stone just showed up with an article on the 'True Origin of the X-Men'. Lots about Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, then mostly about Chris Claremont.
What RS says about JB: "Claremont teamed with the sleek artist John Byrne beginning in 1977, and as the Eighties approached, the suddenly sexy-looking mutants made being 'born weird' seem cool."

I thought it was a good article. Claremont is interviewed and he was on the book longer, so the emphasis is OK with me. But I like that JB is mentioned twice as it reflects his impact on the book. As I have mentioned before and bears repeating -- even though sales were not as strong during JB's run, the back issues and trade paperbacks of JB's run were (and remain) in high demand. The stories are so strong that they served as required reading for anyone getting into the title well after JB left.

And for Rolling Stone to follow that with talking about Xavier's "dream," countering Xavier as Dr. King to Magneto's "any means" Malcolm X is about as wrong as wrong can be.

I agree! It's always a trip to see JB's work before the dialogue and captions - the storytelling is all there.
What's great about the way JB draws characters is the body language. The way Kate Pryde walks and stands is very different from young Kitty Pryde. Compare Kate's confident walk and stance in the future sequence posted on the previous page to the pigeon-toed way she is standing when she enters the Danger Room in the full page image when we cut to 1980.
I also love the body language in this first panel of this page - young Kitty is creeped out by Nightcrawler!

Ah, yes. I wanted Kitty to be creeped out by Kurt, as a counterbalance to all those scenes of him being "cute." NOT the character from GSXM 1!Unfortunately, after this story, Chris forgot all about that subplot and it just went away.
