My impression was that Harley has somehow found herself to be indestructible.

Researching for this contest, I feel incredibly sad about what has been done to a classic Dini character (sigh).

DC Comics has apologized to anyone offended by the controversial Harley Quinn tryout page that asks artists to depict the fan-favorite character naked in a bathtub, seemingly about to commit suicide, and reiterated “the entire story is cartoony and over-the-top in tone.”

(Never, ever thought of suicide in THAT light.)

Still, it appears they're continuing the Open Talent Search.

Why shouldn't they continue it?

Never said they shouldn't... just pointing out that despite the controversy, DC is continuing the contest.

Charles I misinterpreted that line. I took it as you were inferring that DC should cancel the search.

Suicide has long been the subject of comedy, especially of the over the over the top cartoony kind.

I recall at least one Bugs Bunny and one Screwy Squirrel cartoon from the 1940s which had the classic "GOOBYE, CRUEL WORLD!" scene in it. It's all in the execution of the scenes (the character never really dies).

I wonder if all those failed attempts at rocket flight or accidental falls off of cliffs for Wile E Coyote would be counted as suicide? I guess not.

No, they were, as stated, merely failed attempts....not to kill himself, but another (for the purpose of eating him).

Probably not any less disturbing, really...

But...that does happen within a "cartoony" context. Normally, Harley, despite her origins (as a WB animated character, much like Mr. Coyote), doesn't fall under that same "cartoony" umbrella.

I bet they offend someone though. Pluck ANYTHING that's ever been conceived in any creative medium off the shelf, and I guarantee there's someone out there who finds it objectionable. Jokes especially. I'm just sorry to hear DC offered up an apology, instead of a formally declared "you're kidding right?"

Those old WB cartoons have been heavily edited over the decades.  Not sure if it's the case now, but for a time Warner Brothers edited out the shots of Wile E. Coyote actually hitting the canyon floor.  Parent action groups thought it too violent for impressionable minds and WB caved.  Don't know about you, but I saw the originals hundreds of times and my mind wasn't negatively affected...that I know of!  So, yes, many people were and continue to be offended by those old WB cartoons.
