I love it!

When I was a kid, I loved looking through the Overstreet Price Guides. I didn't give a crap about the value of comics, but I did like the glimpse of comics history I got by getting a chance to see all those old covers. Of course I knew Batman, Superman, etc, even on covers from the 30s and 40s, but what really caught my attention was those old-time superheroes that I could never read about at the time because there were no reprints available, heroes like the ones in this commission (especially the original Daredevil) as well as Fawcett heroes like Bulletman.

Hi Folks,

The commissioner of this wonderful piece is a nice guy named Roy Johnson; he only has e-mail access via a freebie account and could not sign up for the Forum, so he asked me to post the following note:

*************************
Thanks to John Byrne on yet another fantastic commission! I look forward to hanging it on my wall. Hopefully, more to come :-)

To answer some of the posts - yes, Standard Comics was a real company that went out of business in the 1950s; no, the Freedom Brigade was not a "real" team, just a bunch of public domain superheroes that I stuck together on a team. Thought it might be fun for JB to draw some "new" characters.

I have a series of commissions basically pretending that Standard Comics continued publishing alongside DC and Marvel to the present day, consolidating PD heroes into one company. They can be found here: http://www.comicartfans.com/GalleryDetail.asp?GCat=56510 along with other silliness.

*************************

What a fun idea for a commission series!  Maybe someday Ray will commission an entire comic using these characters. :-)~

Brad Brickley:

Nazis really do make the best villains.
John Byrne:

 QUOTE:
They also stand front and center representing Byrne's First Rule of War: the guys with the best uniforms ALWAYS LOSE.

I once read an observation, I can't remember where, noting that Nazi officers had black uniforms with a skull-and-crossbones on them.  How did the Germans not all immediately realize that they were the bad guys???

Edit: Dang it!  I realize the presence of the Black Terror in this pin-up complicates things.

The important lesson here lies in how much people are willing to overlook, or even embrace, if they are being told what they want to hear.

David Mitchell and Robert Webb did a sketch based around this on their TV series "That Mitchell and Webb Look" (this version is from their stage show).

Love this commission.  What a great cover. I don't know a thing about the characters, but this one really grabs me for some reason.

Love the whole thing but the Robot is acres of fun! Great call going with the grey-scale too!

I am pretty sure this was a Jerry Seinfeld "bit".

I like it, particularly the robot. I'm very fussy about robots. Some, like Robot Archie, I like. Others, not so much. Mr. Byrne's robots are great.

Feel ridiculous saying this, but I don't think I've ever read a Freedom Brigade story, but a commission like this will get me out looking for one!

Love the old golden-age guys. Always thought if I had the excess money to shell out for a commission, it would be something along the lines of this.

The Flag and the Claw have also appeared as party of Dynamite's Project Superpowers books, although the former is mostly just in the background, grouped with the other heroes of the Ace line.

Very cool idea for a commission!

This is my first time seeing these characters as well, which reminds me of all the times JB's work introduced me to characters I had not known previously.  Jack Kirby's FOURTH WORLD was a complete blank to me, and now I have JB to thank for the introduction to an amazing chapter in Jack Kirby's career.
