Brad, I'll be still commuting down each day of the con from up North, so my car will be available for a Dick's Drive-In Burger run for Paul at the end of the day (drop everyone off back at con center after the run)... Might want to take Paul to the Dick's on 45th, since that was the first one built: http://www.ddir.com/ BTW, ate this place today: http://katsuburger.com/ Limited parking, hard to get to, and pricey, but definitely good!

What's it like hanging with Paul at a con?
Paul, forgive me, but were you at JB's last con appearance at MidOhio? That's the last con I attended as well, but it's been so long that my memory is fairly spotty as to who I met. I met so many people from the JBF that it's kind of a blur. Could be because I hung with Simko for the first of what has turned out to be many, many times!

"What's it like hanging with Paul at a con?"
Depends on the show. There's "Paul is out of the house, but there's not much to do at this con except maybe one guest" Paul. That's the Paul that spends all weekend becoming BFF with "ARTIST'S NAME HERE".
There's "Paul is working the Barry Kitson table" Paul, which is the Paul you don't see much of, as he's working the table all weekend.
Then there's "Paul is in collector overdrive" Paul, which means that for the first hour or two of the show, Paul is a man on a mission booking sketches. Then, there are the artists that require waiting in line, so you've got "Paul, the guy in line", etc..., etc...
But really, you can say the same for many of us that hang at the same convetions. We all get along because we are all crazy at these dang things- especially with collecting art. Not saying we blow wads of cash, we just know what we're there for. We also don't tend to be shy about getting to know each other- what else are you going to do all weekend? We all tend to get in before the shows open, so that allows even more time to hang out and chat. I especially enjoy getting to be "home base" for everyone when needed, as I have a table and an extra chair back in whatever no-man's land of artist alley I'm in.
I will say that it's getting harder and harder to find artists that we want sketches from at conventions- so that makes us even more worked up over getting on "THE LIST"...
good times.

Sounds like fun! The good thing about SDCC is also the bad thing about SDCC. It's a great place to go, but it's so busy and so crazy that there's not the kind of experience there that you have at the smaller cons (see the latest BIG BANG THEORY for a line about just that!). I mention SDCC because there really aren't many smaller cons here in LA as there are in, say, the Midwest. The ones where people attend because they love comics, want to meet fellow fans and that also attract more than a single creator or two you'd actually want to meet.

That's one of the many lovely things about Ohio (cuz it's just a land of wonderfulness)... 0-7 hours in the car gets you to more conventions than you know what to do with. We have some nice shows here in Ohio, and Detroit...and then Pittsburgh, Chicago, Baltimore, Charlotte. Plus, smaller shows are starting in Kentucky, Indiana, West Virginia- and you got Nashville, St Louis, even Toronto that you could get to in 7 hours or so (from Columbus). Fill up a car with comic-nerds and go!!!It helps to do shows with friends. From splitting gas, hotel, etc., to just having familiar faces in the crowd- it makes it a hell of a lot more fun.

and that was "I didn't get in the show before it opened" Paul... Imagine him without waiting out in line for hours...He's gotten spoiled over the years!

Noting my experience at last year's Baltimore Comic Con, I was kind of surprised that there was a line winding around the block there. I was under the impression that the down economy prohibits convention activities. The Japanese animation conventions I used to attend regularly, on the other hand... haven't been to one in a while. Are Otakon or Katsucon still being scheduled?

We will see a more reserved Paul this year. Even for me this year will be what I really want not just about the get. That should narrow things down.
I will say Paul and I have done a lot of damage at these conventions together. Then we actually went to the show!

The differences in sizes and scope of the different conventions is really nice, too. Some people love the huge multi-media SDCC-type shows, some prefer the smaller, cheaper, more comics-creator driven shows. There's probably a way to rank the shows based on scope, but I haven't been to enough to do such rankings justice.
Motor City Con was a line-around-the-building show last year. Just huge with tons of attendees. Whether that reflects an uptick in the economy or people willing to save and splurge I don't know, but it was encouraging to see.

Are Otakon or Katsucon still being scheduled?*** Definitely. Anime Expo, A-Kon, and Sakura-Con as well... I'm considering attending G-Fest this year, if the stars align...
